Watergate 1972 and Water Gate 2005

The Republicans lost a president to a bungled burglary at the Watergate in 1972.

Could history be repeating itself in a very coincidental way -- "namely" Bush is in jeopardy because the water gate broke in New Orleans -- after he had cut the funds to strengthen the "water gate" from the federal budget beginning in 2002?

The thought just struck me.

But after this Water Gate, I hope the Dems keep their eye on the ball and don't let the Repubs regain power the way they did after Nixon. I hope that DUers will also help keep Repubs out of power by finding good Dems to support.

4. Floodgate

Floodgate, a term coined by DU's own Tari, is the preferred term.

Floodgate is to Bush as Watergate is to Nixon. It maintains the water analogy and works better with the "gate" suffix than almost all other "-gate" constructions.

5. One thing about the media ...

After Nixon the media went after Carter and Clinton because, so they say, they didn't want to miss another big scandal like "Watergate." The fallacy in this argument is that they didn't go after Ford, Reagan, Bush I, or Bush II. (Iran-Contra was broken in a Beirut newspaper.)

God knows, they have been publicly silent heretofore on the myriad of scandals surrounding Bush II. Or, more correctly, actively involved in burying the controversies by trying to explain them away.

IMO, the next Dem president will be subject to the same microscopic scrutiny as Carter and Clinton. Unless we make a big fuss about it, which we never did before when our presidents were being subjected to death by a thousand cuts.

12. Not really. The MSM was last on the scene.

That's why they have been trying to "make up" for Watergate everytime a Democrat is elected president.

It was a Washington Post story not reported on ABC, NBC and only meagerly by CBS. The NY Times was silent.

But as the story began to creep out (no pun intended), Nixon's poll numbers started to slump. The Republicans started looking at each other out of the corners of their eyes. As they began to equivocate a bit, the media was forced to start reporting it. And by then, Haldeman's hammerlock on the media was loosening -- he was distracted with his own Watergate troubles by then.

It was a snowball. The lower Nixon's ratings fell, the more Republicans were sweating, the more the media got scared that they were being "outed" by their disinterest. In the end, it wasn't Congress, or the media, or the Special Prosecutor or Justice Department that "got" Nixon.

It was the people. Don't ever forget that. If anything gets Bush - it has to start and be maintained by the people.

And it has started.
