Who would President Gore nominate to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
My guess would be an outstanding, young, unconventional, professional with real-life political experience. Best example I can give is Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm....Federal prosecutor with a 98% conviction rate and also the 1st female state attorney general of Michigan. She fought for consumers-including internet fraud, knows how to work with conservatives constructively to make progress, and would make one helluva Chief Justice for a deeply divided country.

4. I'm thinking Souter..
The Dems would be able to wryly smile and say, "He's a George Bush Sr appointee."

Either that, or he'd pay honor to Stevens' almost-30 years on the bench.

10. Good choice for a lot of reasons. Most importantly
He's a serious-minded judge who makes decisions based on law, precedent, and case merit, not on political ideology. It's possible to find conservatives who do that, too. O'Connor was one. She wasn't someone I agreed with on more than 30% of the cases, but I trusted that her decision would at least be honest, and above all, judicial. She let us down once (Bush v Gore), but she was certainly more honest than Scalia or Thomas.

That's exactly the type of justice Gore would appoint. A fair, judicial candidate who might not agree with us on every issue, but would certainly rule in accordance with the Constitution and law, rather than with partisan ideology.

16. Nobody.
Somehow the evil Rehnquist would have waited to die until a Republican was able to appoint a successor and Sandra Day wouldn't have stepped down either.
I truly believe this.
