9. Heard this story on Democracy Now!
Thanks for the links. I sent the letter with this added:

Clearly there are doubts in this case. Where there is doubt the fundamental American concept of a presumption of innocence must take precedence. You can not take back or undue the mistake of a wrongful execution.

21. lets stop all executions permanently!
seriously, why in the hell are we still executing people? Are there any modernized countries in the world still using capital punishment?

we know the justice system is fallible, so why are we allowing irreversable punishments to be handed down?

any person that does some research will show the death penalty is completely biased regarding race and wealth. A disproportionate number of the people that die are poor, and/or minority.

Nearly two entire decades. Noone can even imagine the horror. Awaiting impending death. It sickens me. What a shameful so-called judicial system. Firebreathing Limbaughs run freely. Poor innocent people languish. Where is the sanity.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Demands Reprieve from Execution for Frances Newton

Frances Newton set to be executed Wednesday; Congresswoman Jackson Lee asks for reprieve based on evidence of multiple weapons found

Washington, DC - Today, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee reiterated her request to State judicial officials for a stay of execution in the case of Frances Newton, whose execution is scheduled for Wednesday. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday refused to stop the execution and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted 7-0 not to recommend that Governor Perry commute the sentence to life in prison. Newton was convicted for the murder on April 9, 1987 of her husband, Adrian Newton, 23, and their son, Alton, 7, and daughter, Farah, 2 for purpose of collecting life insurance policy proceeds for their deaths. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, member of the House Judiciary Committee, has been working with the Texas Innocence Network to get a favorable recommendation by the Board and expressed disappointment in the Board's recommendation. "The case of the prosecution was fraught with numerous and substantial discrepancies. Without additional time to conduct further investigation, there is a chance that an innocent woman will be executed," stated Congresswoman Jackson Lee.

"Considerable evidence exists to case doubt upon the guilt of Frances Newton. First, ballistics evidence used in the trial was processed by the Houston Police Department Crime Laboratory. We know from the vast accounts of erroneous prosecutions like Josiah Sutton and failed scientific analyses that its work is no longer credible or exclusively relied upon."

76. This is really unusual
They usually execute people in the middle of the night; it helps to cut down prison riots when they do.

But they're executing her either right before or right after evening chow, when the prisoners are gathered? Strange.

Expect to see a story about a major prison riot with a couple of shootings in tomorrow's paper.

Goodhair Perry is just like Shrub--he doesn't give a shit about public opinion when it comes to executing people. I thoroughly expect him to off this woman, then have a few prisoners killed in the inevitable riot, and finally blame it all on the whiny liberals.

The only way to stop shit like this from happening is to impose a federal moratorium on execution.

Supreme Court denies Frances Newton
Updated: 9/14/2005 5:17 PM
By: Associated Press
HUNTSVILLE -- The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the execution a Texas woman.

On Wednesday afternoon justices rejected appeals that could have kept Frances Newton, 40, from becoming the third woman executed in Texas since the Civil War. She also would become the first black woman executed in modern times.

Without dissent, the high court declined a pair of appeals about an hour before Newton was scheduled to be taken to the Texas death chamber. Newton is slated to die by chemical injection at 6 p.m.

73. The New York Times and the other top US papers don't say it, but this
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 12:03 AM by Nothing Without Hope
Australian paper shows not only the doubt about her guilt but also the fact that many more executions are planned in Texas:

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,16611163-401,00.html

(snip - goes into the missing second gun and more - this is a long article)

The lawyers also blamed her former court-appointed lawyer, saying he conducted no investigation, had little contact with her and had not subpoenaed any witnesses for the defense by the time her trial began.

Newton was the 13th person executed in Texas this year. She declined to make a final statement or a last meal request.

The state has nine more executions scheduled so far for 2005, including six in November.

In contrast, the entire NY Times article is this content-less blurb:

Texas Executes Woman Who Killed Three Family Members

By STEVE BARNES
Frances Newton, convicted of murdering her husband and their two children in 1987, was executed last night in Huntsville, Tex.

The Supreme Court declined to review Ms. Newton's case earlier, and Gov. Rick Perry declined to intervene.

The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously refused on Monday to recommend that Mr. Perry, a Republican, commute her sentence to life in prison.

Ms. Newton, 40, was the third woman put to death in Texas since capital punishment resumed in 1982.

No possibility of doubt is mentioned in the NY Times article. She's the "woman who killed three family members."

The Washington Post was positively ghoulish, going into the physical details of her dying but not mentioning anything about doubts about her guilt. It also takes a jab at her supporters:

(snip)

About three dozen demonstrators chanted outside but the crowd paled in comparison to the hundreds who gathered in 1998 to protest the execution of Karla Faye Tucker, the first woman executed in Texas since the Civil War.

Of these papers, only the Australian one gives the important information. The NY Times and the Wash Post show why the term "liberal press" is such a cruel joke. Lock-step with the GOP supporters of Frances Newton's killers, no possibility of mistake or hint of the large number of other people still to be killed this year by the State of Texas.

The Wash Post article was especially sickening, with no important information but step-by-step "reality TV"-like descriptions of exactly how Frances died. You can just imagine that reporter, taking notes of all the private family tears, each twitch of Frances' poisoned body. Horrible!

and the step-by-step physical description of her death. No hint that there might be a mistake. No mention of the many other immanent deaths in Texas.

The US isn't leading the world in enlightenment, that's all too clear. Frances might as well have been one of the ignored dead in New Orleans:

By the way, this painting by Steve Bell was shown in the Guardian (UK).

75. Somethings wrong with Texas
I see execution was resumed in 82. Where was dubby at this time?
I never knew they had a period of non-execution, guess I'll have to read up.

I'm sure cheerleader dubby is very proud of the justice system down there. I wonder if he got a chance to mock her? Don't kill me, says the awol chimpanzee to Karla Fay Tucker.
:argh:
