10. Breakfast Of Champions was my first "real" book.

I cannot recall so much of any other book I've ever read. I named a cat Kilgore. I learned how to draw an asshole. I learned how awesome it is to actually read. Kurt almost brought me to tears tonight, and I don't even know why. Maybe because I see this brilliant man sitting there, barely able to speak, still fucking brilliant. While our country is led by a simpering dolt, who, ironically, is also challenged in his speech, albeit for entirely different reasons.

Vonnegut is a god for our times. It was a pleasure seeing him on TDS, as well as on Bill Maher's show this week.

John Irving gave a hilarious recounting of trying to save Vonnegut from choking last month on TDS. The punchline was that he wasn't choking on food but his coughing was from emphysema.

...Vonnegut was an allied prisoner held at "slaughterhouse five" DURING the allied firebombing of Dresden Germany.The episode is still debated to this day as a "war crime"/"atrocity" and informed his humanitarian writings of these past fifty years...he is the real deal..a quirky writer and citizen of Planet Earth...I LOVE the guy...

And Jon Stewart showed himself to be the kind, compassionate man he is in that he stood by Vonnegut until he was safely seated - I know he was standing there just in case Vonnegut got shakey on his feet - to catch him. I was so moved by him doing that.

30. my funny Kurt Vonnegut story . . .

through a rather interesting set of circumstances, the commencement speakers at my college graduation were both Kurt Vonnegut and R. Buckminster Fuller . . .

prior to the start of the ceremonies, I had occasion to wander into the men's room of the student union, where I happened upon one of the funniest sights I've ever seen . . .

now, Fuller was a very short man . . . our college president was about average height, and Vonnegut was (comparatively) kinda tall . . . when I entered the facilities, there were the three of them lined up at the urinals -- in order of height! -- with their academic gowns lifted and enjoying a communal piss . . .

I left immediately, because I couldn't keep from laughing out loud and didn't want to embarrass either myself or these three distinguished gentlemen . . . :)

can't remember if it were the gulf war or the iraq war, but he refered to the iraqi soldiers who got bulldozed as his brothers. when asked to clarify, he said "All soldiers are my brothers." Almost brought me to tears.
