Fight Between La., Houston Students Leads To School Riot
Parents, Students Say Brawl About Respect, Who Controls School

HOUSTON -- A fight Tuesday morning led to a riot between Houston students and evacuated students from Louisiana attending a southeast Houston high school, television station KPRC reported.

<snip>

HISD confirmed the brawl was between Houston students and students evacuated from Louisiana because of Hurricane Katrina who are temporarily attending the school.

<snip>

The confrontation about respect and which group of students controlled the school had been brewing for days, according to students and parents.

"We are trying to help them and they are coming over here beating up our children. I don't think it's fair," one parent told KPRC.

3. Makes me wonder what if anything the school did
to promote peace between the two groups before this incident?

"One of the Jones' kids tossed a soft drink can into the group of News Orleans' kids," HISD spokesman Terry Abbot said"

4. What a self-righteous quote:
"We are trying to help them and they are coming over here beating up our children. I don't think it's fair," one parent told KPRC.

And I'm supposed to believe the beating up is all on one side? Right. Both sides are doing it. And the only reason these particular fights are getting coverage is because of the particulars of where these kids just came from.

Otherwise, you'd hardly hear about it.

7. I thought the same thing
I am also just sure their babies are innocent. Just standing there minding their own business and the new kids from LA got violent on them. :sarcasm:

10. Yep.
99% of the time, with fights like this, both sides did something to contribute to the escalation of things.

Unfortunately big fights DO break out in high schools. But they don't usually get a lot of media play.

12. There was a 'stabbing' at one of our high schools today
It was all over the news this afternoon. Then I talked to a friend who works at that school. Her version of events was completely different from what was on the 6:00 news.

5. It's late and I didn't read the link to be honest, which isn't usual
for me, but I feel compelled to blast out. If the confrontation was about "respect" of which group of students "controlled the school" it sounds like the ones who thought they were in control to begin with, were the ones with the freakin' problem. The parent's comment doesn't jive with the cause of the problem. Right, like "they" are coming over and beating up our children sounds exactly like they would expect gratitude and no "interuption of the way things go here" mentality... look what "we" did for "them" and they want to belong? be part of? get the attention? Gee wonder where those kids who "controlled the school" to begin with, got their attitudes. I know I could be wrong, but my guts says, Nah!

9. I would imagine you are close to being right
And like I said in another post, there are more than a few things the school could have done to prevent this problem.

16. Please do! Not too long for a wall but must be pithier for bumper sticker.

14. There was already something wrong at that school before the LA
kids got there. New students, especially those violently uprooted from their homes, are not going to go to a new school with some sort of self-righteous attitude that they need to be respected unless there was already some undercurrent of racism, distrust, and/or overall bad feelings at this school. My district has taken in some 200 students from LA they are all coming in doing as well as could be expected with no violence.

Surely this can't be the first violent incident at this school.

I mean, don't those underprivileged kids like to fight and stuff? Isn't that what their kind do? Sounds like things are going great!
