4. Yes. Empty that shelter - please! For republican voters who
don't want to take a family - perhaps they could take in pets.

6. Could be -- there are many Republicans who
are very upset about the treatment of both people and their pets -- so this could be a unifying theme.

There are some good -- old fashioned Republicans who still care.

8. I know some hard-core, Faux-"news" watching repugs, who are
hopelessly in love with their furbabies. You are absolutely correct about this being a unifying issue.

These furbabies are people's family members, for god's sake! And whoever hurts them, could really be hurt politically. And whoever ends up coming to their rescue is going to be seen as the hero. .... albeit a weak one, since it has been so long.

9. Volunteers badly needed.
If anyone's able to volunteer. I got this in an e-mail from DawnWatch yesterday:

An update on the Katrina disaster area: As of 9/13/05 they are still desperate for volunteers. I have spoken with friends at the shelter in Gonzales, Louisiana, who say they enough supplies but not enough people. They suggest that if you are able to go down there, please just go. Of particular need are large air-conditioned rigs that can transport many animals.

Mississippi is also in dire need of volunteers. There are thousands of animals and no people to care for them. Randy Grimm, guardian of Quentin, the famous dog who last year survived the gas chambers, is in Mississippi and is calling for help. I hope to speak with him tomorrow, Wednesday, and have more information for those who wish to go to Mississippi.

I have contact information for the HSUS shelter in Gonzales Louisiana and the Best Friends shelter in Tylertown, and a list of vaccinations one should get and supplies one needs to bring, compiled by Kinship Circle, all on my website at www.DawnWatch.com/katrina.htm

Brenda Shoss of Kinship Circle is an excellent resource for information on volunteering. She is at info@kinshipcircle.org

10. Yes! Thank you for adding that . Volunteers, vets and those who are
willing to foster and adopt. Unfortunately, the way things operate in that area, there is a lot of euthanizing that goes on.
People now are trying to grab up the animals that are scheduled to be gassed.

Dr. White is my hero! :hi:

<snip>

On the first Friday after Hurricane Katrina hit, Dr. Eric White, DVM, was one of the first people into devastated St. Bernard Parish, taking a small group of people in to rescue elderly friends from the floodwaters.

It was then that the veterinarian saw first hand the plight of animals in the region, and decided he had to help them.

“He has a basic love for animals, and he understands the importance of the pet/owner relationship,” says his wife, Marilynn White. “He knows that these people have lost everything, and getting them their pet may be the only thing we can do to help them to recover from their losses.”

Over the past few days, White has rescued approximately one hundred animals from St. Bernard, including dogs, cats, several birds, a pet turtle, a duck, and a squirrel. White has treated the animals and transported them to temporary housing at the New Iberia Humane Society, where he is a board member.

But White realized that he couldn’t save enough animals by making the five-hour round trip to New Iberia every day, so he is setting up temporary housing for animals in St. Bernard, where they can be safe and receive food and water until transports are available to move them.

Officials found a large barn in St. Bernard Parish that was dry, where White is setting up dog runs and other temporary shelter for animals rescued from the area. From there, he hopes to transport them out of the parish within a few days, and if he can’t immediately find their owners, place them in foster homes until the owners can be located.

“Getting these pets out of the floodwaters, out of the demolished houses, is the immediate need,” Marilynn White says. “The second need is getting them to a safe place with food and water. Third is connecting them with their owners, and if he can’t right away, finding them foster homes.”

Since the area is still in lockdown, few animal rescue groups have been allowed into St. Bernard Parish, where pets are in a desperate struggle for survival. (Best Friends is one of the few groups conducting rescues there – see our reports on the Best Friends Activities page.) Dr. White has only been allowed into the area because of important connections he made that first Friday, when he went into the parish to rescue people.

Since then he has been going in with a small group of two or three volunteers, reaching the animals by land and with his fishing boat, and transporting them out of the area using his pickup truck pulling a flatbed trailer with sides, on which he secures crate after crate of cats and dogs, tying the crates down with a cargo net.

12. What a wonderful story!
I cringed as soon as I saw "St. Bernard Parish" since so many of the atrocities have been happening there. But this too gives us so much cause for hope.

... So there may be some major rescues going on soon ... something to do with thousands of calls and emails and faxes and petition signatures ... :D

14. Thank you for mentioning these heroes.
They are one of the very few groups that really seemed to be doing some tough rescues.
And thank god they reported that they were given 72-hrs. notice until shooting was to begin.
So many people raged about it, there was a lot of backpedaling by the heartless "authorities."
Pasado has saved countless little lives. O8)

15. nicknameless, in these pet threads, you might want to repost donor info
If possible, you might want to paste into your post information for people who want to donate to the various NOLA pet groups. That way, if they are inspired, they could donate quickly, instead of hunting around the Web.
