We are Safe and Sound
Thanks very much for the PM's. I will answer them. Our home was in the path of the hurricane. Lots of trees downed but only minor damage to the house. Spent a week with my mother in law in Kansas as we were without electricity and water for quite a while. We are northwest of Gulfport and our little part of the world is showing signs of "normalcy." Many stores are opened, gas is relatively easy to get although all the stations are now "pay first." Regular this AM was 2.63. Considering what has happened to those to the south of us we are very lucky. Lots of chainsawing and brush clearing in my future.

FEMA isn't making too many friends around here. I've not been home long enough to be effected by them one way or the other.

Great to be back posting on DU. I truly hope that a Hurricane like Katrina is a once in a lifetime event. I don't want to do it again.

61. Hello Rowdy
The air is alive with the whirring of chain saws. I'm gonna stay optimistic and believe we'll be better off in the long run. I have no doubt I'll be back to the Tropical Isle nursing an ice cold budweiser before too much longer. Can't wait to hear what bush has to say tonight. I hope you guys stay safe.

67. Katrina hit us with about 70 mph winds and sheets of rain.....
No storm damage at my house and moderately little in town. Our electricity never even went off (one of only a very few in the county).
Two or three days late we had four freaking FEMA trucks in town handing out ice. Nobody's on the fucking coast where the devastation is, they're
all farting around in Canton where they can get a good meal! What a farce.

I went out for beer at the height of the storm. Struggled my way into a small convenience store and asked an older black lady "Are ya open?"...Her response "Naw, I'm just standing here with the door unlocked for the hell of it!" I can be such a dumb-ass!

19. I've been so worried about you BOSSHOG! Hello and welcome back!
I'm glad you're OK. How did your yard and garden fare (besides the trees)? Did your Crape Myrtles survive?

We have all been worried about you and thinking of you and your family.

Only $2.63 for regular? Wow! It's $2.95 here in Athens, GA. it would be higher except for the fact that the governor suspended the gas tax during September.

My in-laws had to evacuate their home in Lacombe, LA. They hope to have utilities, water and a new roof sometime in October.

Take care.

My family used to vacation in the little town of Clermont Harbor (my uncle still had a house there). I looked at the NOAA pictures. It's simply not there anymore. Not a single house, all the way back past the RR tracks. You can't even see some foundations. Most literally wiped off the face of the earth.

Then my family in N.O. (brother's family, Mom & Dad, others)... they're still in Shreveport. Maybe to stay. But at least they're safe.

Again, good you're back!

66. Way too much pride
in this part of the country for "christian conservatives" to admit they erred in voting the way they did. Extensive energy will be spent trying to blame any and all problems related to the storm on anyone but a republican. I am amused that our (Mississippi's) governor, republican haley barbour, a classic republican who opposes any government intervention in social issues is begging the feds for support.

I'm in the same situation as you. We had no power, still have no water, and had three trees on the house...just got one off of the house, so now we have two, and can't remove one of those until the power company comes to help, because it's on the roof right above the powerline to the house. If my dad had not built my cabin as sturdy as he did, it would have been ripped apart by the trees.

We also have lots of work ahead. On our 40 acres, we must have at least 50 trees down. Ancient hickories, poplars, beeches, pines. Gone.

But we are alive--and I am so glad to hear that you are, too.

(And you still owe me an oyster po-boy. We'll have to meet up at Acme's when it reopens and our work at hour homes is done.)

  :pals:

WE WILL BE OKAY and we will eat Po-Boys very soon. And we will second line down any damn street we want to. We are relatively unscathed and the outpouring of support and offers of assistance have brought me to tears. I've chosen to leave my property and help others because we are so very, very lucky. I'll take a blackened catfish poboy dressed. Thanks for the post
