I'm in a real dilemma
I'm in the transformation of becoming a senior citizen, in other words I'm getting OLD. I have no children of my own blood but I've been blessed with two great stepsons as this has been my lifelong dream. Now I'm looking forward to grandchildren some day with a sad heart. I feel guilty for wanting to see them brought into this world that bush* has created for them to more than likely have to struggle through.
My dilemma is, do I get my old tired complacent ass up and get involved in my local politics or do I continue to hope for the best. I've been writing my local papers voicing my opinion with some success as measured by the damage to my mailbox. I live in a heavily bush* area but that all of our local offices are held by democrats. I don't know where to start or what to do but I feel I must do something for the sake of the said grandchildren.

4. I guess you have to decide whether or not it is a lost cause
I think the most important thing is that we all know and speak the truth. Beyond that, I guess we all have to decide how much we are willing / able to give of ourselves, and what the return on that effort is likely to be.

I'm 30 and am having serious doubts about whether this world needs another human (my child or not).

7. We don't get old anymore, we get active!
Now listen to me: I teach gerontology. We don't retire anymore -- what we call retirement is just a change in career, or even of a job, or of a new funding source. We certainly don't disengage from society -- that was what used to be preached at the old to disempower them. No, we get active. And if we are working less for pay, we use the extra time to volunteer, or to enter politics.

So get out there and FIGHT for your grandchildren, and your great-grandchildren yet to come!

8. A lot of us face the same problem.
The big problem as I see it is fear. Dissention has been disastrous to many who have tried to speak out. Look at the media and how they have been intimidated, also our own Democratic party. Dissenters mysteriously disappear off the radar screen. Remember Ritter! How he tried to speak about about how there were no WMDs? And what happened! um, they "found" porn on his computers! How convenient!
I'm a grandma, not affluent or in any prestigeous position, living right smack in the middle of Red country and sometimes even fear putting posts on this board or subscribing to Buzzblash!! -- fear the feds will come haul me off and no one will ever know where I disappeared to. So, I'll vote, and I'll rant here a little bit, but getting really active in the "land of the free" has gotten to be quite hazardous to your health!

10. Here are 2 quotes that I try to live by.
Edited on Wed Sep-14-05 04:10 PM by vickiss
"The most commom way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any": Alice Walker "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." -Martin Luther King Jr.

My grandson is four. It matters.

Great luck to you.
