SC Primary: Edwards at 23 and 16 percent in new polls

A new South Carolina poll released Tuesday by the American Research Group shows John Edwards winning in South Carolina by 9 points.
And last week, Edwards for President released two new polls -- of South Carolina and Iowa -- from the Global Strategy Group. The South Carolina poll shows Senator Edwards in first place with 23 percent of the vote and a commanding 10-point lead. The Iowa poll shows Senator Edwards more than doubling his support since June and ahead of better-known candidates.

2. SC Will End up in Clark's Hands

Clark is second in most SC polls, and Southern Democratic officials are falling in line with him. He will likely gain in support, especially since Southern primary voters are more Centrist than NH or Iowa voters. This will come in handy if Clark loses New Hampshire, but NH's outcome is impossible to forsee at this time.

If Edwards wants to remain in this race, than SC is his do or die situation.

I really like a lot of Edwards' positions, it'll be good to keep him in the race.

I'm not bashing Edwards here, but I still think he knew from the beginning that he really didn't stand much of a chance to win. Instead, he is trying to gain steam and attention to draw a lucrative (and deserved) VP nod. I think that has been his goal all along, that's why he "oddly" announced he wasn't going in for Congressional re-election. Edwards would make a great VP candidate, which is what he's thinking too ;)

him announcing he wasn't running for reelection wasn't odd at all if you've been paying any attention. For months people have been holding him not making a decision against him. His announcement frees up other dems to announce for NC senate, like Bowles, who has since done just that.

it's simply moronic to say that he's running for vp. All that is an anti-candidate talking point from people who don't want that candidate to win the nomination. It's the reason that Edwards, Clark, and Graham have all been repeatedly tagged with it, from the right(who realize they would be the 3 strongest candidates against Bush), and there democratic opponents camps(who will similarly say things to discredit these men's potential nominations)

there would be no need to jeopordise his senate seat if all he wanted was to be vice president. It's perfectly legal and politically feasable to run for both at the same time. Ala Leiberman in '00. The same goes for Graham.

And the only serious candidate he would make remote sense for would be Clark. Dean and Kerry would be crushed in the south and almost all of rural america with Jesus Christ as there veep, so obviously Edwards or any other image-centric southernor like Edwards isn't going to be a real consideration.

I wouldn't have expected him to do anything different on his Senate seat than say one way or the other before he made his official campaign launch. And he's not running for VP, he's not the kind of person to shoot for something without every intention of getting it. He's just got to figure out how to make some PR waves.

Very little negativity, SOLID performances during the debates, and an inherent sincerity that can't be faked.

Those are the wizards who brought us the Gore campaign and who are now working their magic for Clark.

It's pretty obvious that the Clark team considers Edwards a danger, whether the others do or not. Not surprising, the "southern thing" is a major element for both campaigns.

I just don't want anyone who would have been happy with a "compassionate conservative" and who is for vouchers getting near the presidency, regardless of how combative he is of Junior. I don't think Clark's a skunk like a couple of the other contenders, but many of his supporters and some of his staff certainly are, and that says a lot.

Throughout the crowd were Generation Dean signs and the visit was a stop on a tour that will take Dean to seven college campuses around the country in four days. Dean didn't mention his Democratic opponents, but took aim at George Bush.

"South Carolinians have voted Republican for 30 years," said Dean, who appeared on stage with no jacket and blue short-sleeve shirt. "Tell me what you have to show for it?"

"Nothing! Nothing!" several in the crowd shouted back.

"The Legislature cut $73 million out of the public school system. Jobs gone to other countries especially in textiles. People haven't had raises in five years because their health insurance premiums took their raise in pay," Dean said.

"If you're satisfied with that, you ought to vote for George Bush," he said. "But maybe you ought to vote Democratic again. Because when white people and black people and brown people vote together in this country, that's when we make social progress."

Edwards and Kucinich are my two favorites that I have been unable to choose between in deciding to support. However, I know Kucinich is a definite longshot, and am very happy to see John Edwards holding his ground in SC as that's such a vital state for him.

Hopefully I'll actually get to vote in a primary in TX- I'm not certain whether the Repugs ever agreed on which gerrymandered re-redistricting map they plan to screw us w/ and I heard their indecision was possibly slated to postpone our primary.

24. I watched the missed debate

tonight on tape with my wife and have to admit Edwards is good, really good, very impressed. He and Clark were the only two that were above the poke, jab and swipe political moments. Class acts.

While I support Clark hands down, I see a lot of potential in Edwards and while I would/could see a Clark/Edwards ticket, I really wouldn't mind an Edwards/Whoever.

I also liked (to my surprise) Sharpton, a lot of what he said actually made sense and was right on the money. I especially liked the "8 career politicians, an officer and a gentleman" comment.

CMB was also very good as was Dennis K.

All you Edwards folks have a fine candidate and should be proud of him, he's head and shoulders above most of what's out there!
