The emperor is naked. Bush is looking bad and the media is no longer covering for him. Who flipped the switch and why?

4. Though I was tempted to vote maybe, I decided to vote yes.

Given Bush's belicose inaugural statement, something to the effect "I have earned political capital and I'm going to spend it", I think his dreams of an imperial presidency are vanishing. I think "cutting him off at the knees" is a more apt description. His failures on Iraq, Social Security and now Katrina are starting to diminish support of the Republican base.

His days of having Congress rubber stamp his policies are over. I doubt that the powers that be would completely abandon "*" and risk alienating his hardcore supporters.

5. Frozen and committed

Just like everyone else of good will who is unimaginatively impotent.
The consolation of the agenda is grimly held onto. the access to alternatives favorable to them ripped away. It's the Hitler champion, the German Power trip instead of global corporatism, all over again. The wars are thankfully limited and economically focused. The market goes up, taxes and regulation down.

You are talking about hardy souls who would risk the fate of the entire world to make a buck and can't get their eyes away from the bottom line. Also a lot of personal cowardice when it comes down to higher human values. Also the Macbeth thing. Too far now. Not a hero for mankind in the whole bunch. Not one who can turn against a member of the club no matter how bad their behavior. And the seat of power they can't get to now, can't rebel without losing favor with the Chimperor.

Almost anyone with a gun or a way to bring down this disaster has a compelling reason but the only courageous people, few whistleblowers and resignees are buried far below. One certainly hopes, even those losing loved ones directly from this regime and the most unscrupulous, seem unlikely to use violent means. That is a good thing, maybe with mixed motives. Nation and humanity, personal integrity and group identity on behalf of the best values, are NOT focused on stopping this outrage, the abomination of desolation in our quaintly revered institutions. If the best can't grasp it how can those profiting daily from the carnage?

9. Nixon redux...

he's damaged goods, and if we get a Democratic house next year, the smart ones will drop him as soon as "impeachment" is uttered. Nixon might have survived impeachment if he wasn't so Nixon, but TPTB, the real ones, had had enough of him, so he was encouraged to resign.

Agnew resigned in disgrace so a pliant and unobjectionable Ford could step in, so expect Cheney to have health problems and step down, leaving the coast clear for a resignation with a new broom sweeping very clean.

At least, that's the way I hope it plays. And it just might play that way if TPTB decide Jeb is too close to the problems to run in '08.
