45. Clarifying misconceptions ....
Just to clarify several people's misconception here ......

It is true Michael Moore strongly supported Nader in 2000 and he could safely vote for Nader without hurting Gore because he lives in New York, a safe (blue) state where everyone knew Gore would win handily. In the final week/days before the 2000 election when he saw how close Bush and Gore were in the polls in some states, he tried to get Nader to stop campaigning in the close states and even flew to Florida where Nader was speaking to plead with him in person. He was not successful, but he tried hard.

Read his book, Stupid White Men, for the whole story.

I live in a state that could have gone either way. I wanted to vote for Nader, but I did not dare do so. My state barely got into the Gore column after recounts.

Saddening isn't it? Who'd of thought we'd ever see the day when Moore would 'support' a Republican. I thought he wanted Bush out of office. Sigh. Another one bites the dust.

it is not provocative. However outside of Clark's supporters there are many of us who question the timing and depth of Clark's conversion to the Democratic party. That is why it is a hot topic and angers his followers.

I've voted for every Democrat since 1972 and I do not appreciate anyone telling me that my candidate deserves different treatment because YOU don't think he's Democratic enough. I really avoid stooping to rudeness because its counter productive but you tempt me mightily. Thank God I am a patient man. Lets just see what our party chooses to do. I have a good feeling that I'll be much happier next fall than you will.

I was politically naive once. I got taken a time or two, but I learned from it.

I wasn't taken this time. I smelled a scam from the git go. clark is as much a Dem as I am a man.

Extra! July/August 1999 Legitimate Targets? How U.S. Media Supported War Crimes in Yugoslavia - By Jim Naureckas
NATO justified the bombing of the Belgrade TV station, saying it was a legitimate military target. "We've struck at his TV stations and transmitters because they're as much a part of his military machine prolonging and promoting this conflict as his army and security forces," U.S. General Wesley Clark explained--"his," of course, referring to Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic. It wasn't Milosevic, however, who was killed when the Belgrade studios were bombed on April 23, but rather 20 journalists, technicians and other civilians.

And refresh my memory... when was Dean working as a lobbyist for Henry Kissinger?

46. The only thing democratic about Clark is his script....
Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 02:05 AM by TLM

"He's pro choice, pro aff action, anti bush tax cut,"

He says he is, and since he has no record of policy and has never held office, all we have to go on is what he says.

However when his audience is republican, he says something completly different.

"anti iraq war,"

No he isn't. He's been riding the fence, and admitted it.

http://www.washtimes.com/national/20030922-105420-9821r.htm

Since entering the race, Mr. Clark has made a series of gaffes.
He waffled last week over whether he would have voted for the resolution to launch war against Iraq. Eventually, he settled on saying, "I don't know whether I would have or not. I've said it both ways."

(CNN 1/21/03) "I probably wouldn't have made the moves that got us to this point. But just assuming that we're here at this point, then I think that the president is going to have to move ahead, despite the fact that the allies have reservations." As he later elaborated

(CNN, 2/5/03): "The credibility of the United States is on the line, and Saddam Hussein has these weapons and so, you know, we're going to go ahead and do this and the rest of the world's got to get with us.... The U.N. has got to come in and belly up to the bar on this. But the president of the United States has put his credibility on the line, too. And so this is the time that these nations around the world, and the United Nations, are going to have to look at this evidence and decide who they line up with."

"pro UN, anti-PNAC(even spoke out SPECIFICALLY against PNAC),"

He also spoke out specifically in favor of the folks from PNAC saying they were his friends and he would like to work with them again.

So which speaking out do we beleive?

" pro environment, even said he's a democrat..."

But saying is all he's ever done... and what he said changed depending on who his audience was. And it seems as though I'm not the first one to notice.

"I find him to be a guy who's very clever at determining which way the wind's blowing," said Gen. Paul Funk, who was General Clark's boss in the early 1990's. "Who knows, maybe in the political world that's a good thing."

***

"The general said Clark "needs to win, right down to the core of his fiber," which tends to make him "highly manipulative."

"There are an awful lot of people," added another retired four-star, who also requested anonymity, "who believe Wes will tell anybody what they want to hear and tell somebody the exact opposite five minutes later. The people who have worked closely with him are the least complimentary, because he can be very abrasive, very domineering."

for his Nader vote and for those of us that saw how foolish it was voting for Nader, it's frustrating to hear anyone trying to defend their vote.

Some of us realized that Bush would be worse than anything we'd seen before for it was all indicated by his record in Texas and the previous actions of congressional republicans. I'm sorry, but saying "we didn't expect it to be this bad" doesn't cut it.

That said, I'm glad Moore realizes that now is not the time to play games and this election is more than building a third party, for the future of this nation is at stake. For any chance of beating Bush, I'd say the best thing to do is let those that despise Bush join the campaign to get rid of him. I'm willing to ignore who they supported in '00, regardless of whether it was Nader or Bush.

I hope people understand that thi race will not be abour pandering. I hope most Greens realize that not voting for the democratic party out of spite will get this nation no where. The issues they cherish may not be pervectly embodied by democrats, but that is irrelevent in the current system for a second term will make any progress near impossible. Likewise, I hope dems will not simply dismiss all greens as fanatics or fools, or feel so bitter for their Nader vote, that they'd stop working with them. Spite is foolish.

Let's take a look at the right wing -- there are many factions, the isolationist, the PNAC crowd, the religious right , and the wealthy corporate/libertarian crowd (the latter two kind of overlapping all of these groups I'd say). Somehow, they've been able to stick together for the most part. Bush has given each group enough to keep them happy. For example the free trade libertarian crowd has been very upset with the president over his stel tarrifs, and farm subsidies package, but when the time comes I'm sure they'll back him. Same goes with the RR. Obviously they would have preferred Bush to have more activelly backed that judge in Al. over the 10 commandments issue, but they won't sit at home, because he didn't. They also probably dispise the fact that this administration favors free trade with China, even though their treatment of Christians is poor, and they force abortions.

No nominee will have a "pure" liberal record. Russ Fiengold comes close, but he voted for Ashcroft and with that we can see he wasn't perfect. Even Wellstone voted for the patriot act. You get my point. No one's perfect...but we can and should do a better job of sticking by our candidates.

"And I'm very glad we've got the great team in office, men like Colin Powell, Don Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice... people I know very well - our president George W. Bush. We need them there."

"We were really helped when President Ronald Reagan came in. I remember non-commissioned officers who were going to retire and they re-enlisted because they believed in President Reagan."

"That's the kind of President Ronald Reagan was. He helped our country win the Cold War. He put it behind us in a way no one ever believed would be possible. He was truly a great American leader. And those of us in the Armed Forces loved him, respected him, and tremendously admired him for his great leadership."

"President George Bush had the courage and the vision... and we will always be grateful to President George Bush for that tremendous leadership and statesmanship."

First off, I admire Moores work, but I don't take his support as anything huge.

I don't feel it was any mistake for Moore to support Nader in 2k. I know he was disturbed by Nader campaigning in swing states. After 8 years of a Democratic, media labeled 'liberal' rule, how could anyone who watched 2 seconds of the lies GWB spewed in the debates think the turnout could be this? I don't think Ralph lost the election, I've read here that there was irregularities in other states in 2000. I think the right wing would've called them out if needed. Beyond that votes did not matter, the Supreme Court selected the man.

I am a Green (grew up mostly during Clinton) and have re-registered to vote for Dennis in the primaries, and just about any single Democrat in the general election. I am still skeptical about your candidate.

I think Clinton moved to the center enough during his reign that the distinction b/t the economic policies of the two parties was hard to tell (I think Nader was strong on his opinions).

Anywho, I was glad a man like Nader exists when I got half my car up on an embankment, hit a telephone pole, rolled twice, and was able to walk away. I also think that if the Democrats would champion a majority of the issues the Green party base supports, they would have no reason to exist. Well, they would exist, being as they are a global party, but they would be as well off as say... the Communist party.
