Odd - for weeks we read: Bush polls drop to lowest... and always
seems to be 41%.

Anyone else notice this? For a month these "Lowest polls" numbers seemed to be stuck at 43% - now each new low seems to be "41%".

How is it that this keeps being "lowest" even though it was lowest a week ago, two weeks ago? What's up with this - a "PollPlungeProtectionTeam?"

As I typed this - puzzling over how for weeks we will read different "new lows" where the same number pops up again and again - I didn't realize the specific numbers and their other significance. Some pollster imps on the mission to type new lows that reflect the old lows - stuck on coded subtlety... that now the son (by number) has sunk to the popularity of the father ("41"?)

1. They obviously cannot...
Bring themselves to publish the real numbers, so they are just expanding the margin of error to something that approaches the size of China. ;-)

7. Attention spans of fruit flies
Aside from us, who's either going to refute their numbers, or fact check that the numbers being reported are actually lower than they were? Answer that and you understand why there's no reason to report real numbers that are abysmal.

30. Somewhere between 30% and 35% of this country are the religiously insane
Somewhere between 30 and 35% of this country are the folks who are
religiously insane. This is Bush's base and they would claim to
support him *NO MATTER WHAT*, simply because he's not a Devil-
Worshiping Democrat (DWD).

So when you see "Bush support at 41%", what it means is that Bush's
support among the non-insane is down to something like 5-10%. So we
still have work to do.

9. I would agree,
but when that happens what number will they report? Starting to suspect it will be 41% with base + and still 41% (reported) when it has really dropped only to his rabid base. The attention of fruit flies explanation makes sense - in that folks don't recall that last week the "new lows" were 41% and this week the "new lows" are 41%.

8. Poll Plunge Protection Team, *chuckle*
Maybe the Cult of Dubya has joined the industries deemed Too Big to Fail. America's finances, security, and infrastructure are teetering in a precarious state and these pollsters might ask themselves -- do I want to be the one who pops the bubble?

18. Fear of bringing it all down
Bush and the Republicans have long concealed the rot they've engineered by creative accounting, rearranging the deck chairs, and razzle-dazzle marketing. Pop that illusion and suddenly no one can ignore a treasury full of IOUs, crumbling domestic infrastructure, and financial bubbles ready to blow. Bye-bye DOW, hello austerity and hardship.

20. complicit folks
by playing the emporer's fine clothes game - the infrastructure and worse has continued to erode - perhaps beyond anything but extreme painful remedies - while there was a point at which policy fixes might have been enough. Fools would rather it falls apart, more catastrophically as things continue to rapidly deteriorate?

Serious thought before I sign off and go to work.

Conventional wisdom attributes the collapse of the Soviet Union to Reagan - not for his wise anticommunism efforts - but for restarting a very expensive arms race that their economy could not sustain - such that the economy was bound to collapse under its weight with lack of structural support (eroded for spending on the arms race.) Ironic - as it seems the neocons are doing the same thing, intentionally, to our own country. Expensive arms spending ... at cost of eroding infrastructure (and in our case decreasing ability to be self-sustaining economically)... why are they applying this formula to blow up our system? That really should be the question the public starts to discuss.

25. Seems apparent to me
But it's one of those questions the public cannot countenance. Republicans are protected by the public's inherent respect for the institutions they occupy. One of the worst consequences of Watergate was the deep cynicism that took root in its aftermath. When Dubya's perfidy eventually comes to light, the loss of trust and sense of common purpose could wreck the country for decades.

With higher regional numbers in the south and west and lower numbers elsewhere.

And, as always, I wonder again, how can anybody at all support this clueless, miserable failure???/

21. out of the loop - is he addressing the nation?
he tends to go downhill when he does this. Maybe he will have learned not to try to sell his other policies (eg IRAQ) - and stay focused - otherwise he will not be perceived well and we will read:

"Bush poll numbers fall to new low... 41%"

Per the Nixon question - which president was he (number wise) - maybe that is next magic plateau number.

26. Yes... supposedly on all his "plans" for NOLA
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 06:48 AM by hlthe2b
SANTA CLAUS will make an early appearance tonight, as their only option is to try to throw money on this clusterfuck and hope it salves some of the anger. As far as NOLA is concerned, I'm glad the situation, with 3 1/2 more years to go would be favorable for them to actually get the help they need, but given the propensity for corruption, n-obid crony contracts, and broken promises--I don't hold out tremendous hope.

Plus, we are already paying something like $600million daily for interest alone on the debt. He won't repeal his tax breaks for the rich, nor stubbornly pull out of Iraq, so there will be economic hell to be paid.

24. We are between Democracy and Open Dictatorship....
This phase lasts as long as a majority of the people believe we are still a Democracy. When Republicans continue winning elections although their President's popularity in the 20's, the charade is over. And so it's always on the low 40s...

29. maybe he has focus groups on standby, like Defense Contractors
that pour money from their pension funds into the stock market when it his a certain low(insured by your tax dollars, of course.

These loyalists are not allowed to leave their homes, and when Bush's poll numbers hit a new low, the pollster's computers automatically dial this core group of supporters, and Voila! they will never dip below 40.

Hee hee - that was fun. Any more questions?! LOL!

Whether George Bush is popular or not? Who is orchestrating this bullshit?? If his polls go up to 60%, how will that help the victims of Hurricane Katrina? They will still be homeless, jobless, and in desperate condition. But George will be better off? Screw him!
