Parts of New Orleans open for businesses to enter this coming weekend. Curfew still in effect. He is listing zip codes and the days those parts of town will be open to residents. 182,000 residents going back home.

26 September - Date French Quarter to open (pending a recheck of the electric system)

Convention Center to be converted to retail outlets for food and supplies. Sounds like someone has a plan. The port of New Orleans is opened. The airport is coming back online. The twin span bridges leading from New Orleans to Slidell is being repaired.

Sure sounds like the Mayor is in charge. Sure sounds like local leaders in Jefferson and Orleans and St Tammany and St Bernard and Plaquemines Parrishs are working their asses off and LEADING recovery efforts with professionalism and gusto. Just a little local FYI, FEMA officials missed two scheduled meetings with local officials this week.

Rumor has it he may appoint Giuliani or someone like that to head up the rebuilding. Here in NY we got a lot of meddling by state officials including NJ officials in the planning for the WTC site, which should have been a NYC decision. How is Nagin going to keep BushCO out of his hair?

The Coast Guard Vice Admiral said there will be no ambiguity in responsibilities and everyone will know what their job is and who their boss is. I seriously doubt bush will push too hard. Especially if the locals show progress and a viable plan. I believe rove's down to his last hurrah. The best advice he can give bush is stay the hell out of the way.

As I type, he is taking questions from reporters on the streets of New Orleans. limbaugh should come down and broadcast live from the streets of New Orleans and get a taste of reality and a view of leadership.

You know if I were him I think I would dedicate that building for a memorial purpose of some kind (not sure what maybe a museum?)

I don't think I could go in that place and eat or shop given what's happened there recently, but then again most people aren't as weird about this stuff as I am!

Aside from all that...it sounds like he has a plan and is trying to initiate something positive at least!

7. The Convention Center is huge

and is in a pretty good location for locals to access. The plan is temporary. Eventually it will be back to doing what it does best, host conventions. It may have a positive symbolism for those most effected by the hurricane. It is concrete proof that progress has been made in the past two weeks.

The plan is for retailers to set up mobile outlets for groceries, hardware goods and all the stuff locals will need to get back on their feet.

No doubt there will be a memorial of some sort erected in New Orleans but that won't happen for awhile.

I didn't realize he was utilizing it for retailers etc in a temporary fashion.

Now that you've clarified, this makes a lot of sense.

I have seen the convention center but have never been inside it and I had forgotten how big it is.

The photos of the city NOW compared to what it actually looked like when I have previously been there...are just shocking the hell out of me.

It's hard to believe it's the same city!

I thought the info was rather specific. Zip codes, dates of entry, conditions for reopening? I truly believe the local leaders are doing a very fine job of coping with what they have to cope with. And I have no problem attacking the OP. If there is any information I may provide to you about what is going on down here, please let me know and I'll do my best to get it to you.

Sometimes communications become skewed in this medium. Hopefully before too much longer (months) we all can head to the French Quarter and once again enjoy the city that care forgot. I'm extremely proud of the efforts being made by local authorities to get us turned in the right direction. You are cordially invited to the grand reopening of the Big Easy. I don't know when that will occur but there is no doubt in my mind and in my heart that it will occur. And once again, we will let the good times roll.

that apparently is making some republicans mad.....but then I imagine he's afraid that the economic conservatives and the anti-gov people would have a fit that another layer of buracracy has been created. Hell, all they want is to line as many contractors pockets as possible. That's the definition of "aid" to a republican.
