They are super cell storms in the midwest.

Very scary stuff. Amazing they were able to capture those clouds so close to the ground.

10. Absolutely!
though you have to question the judgment of someone who would stay so close to such a powerful storm to take pictures like these. It's not something to lose one's life over.

9. I don't think
that is Gulf Coast geography. Looks like midwest.

Tropical storms don't look like that. We (I live on the Gulf coast) get a lot of grey, overcast skies before the actual storm starts in.

When we are on the outskirts of the storm we get feeder bands but they are very high and move very fast... not those amazing thunder boomers in those pix.

But those ARE awesome pictures. Just not a hurricane.

13. Actual hurricane clouds

The still photo shows you nothing. Those clouds are racing by at incredible speeds.

And just above that, lies this:

The Eye Wall:

Everyone was awed to find this stadium effect, where you feel as though you are inside a giant football stadium made of clouds. The clouds arch up and away, far above your head. The aircraft is two miles high (10,000 feet), while the top edge of these clouds may be perhaps 50,000 feet high. It is a humbling sight which even few Hurricane Hunters have witnessed.

16. If you want some tornado pics, check this guy out:
http://www.extremeinstability.com/my_chase_accounts.htm

In my opinion, he's one of the best tornado photogs around.

Not to mention that he seems to have an uncanny knack for finding them in the first place!
