Roberts, expediency, and the "Good German" defense.
Roberts has used the "I was just following orders" defense of his blatantly racist and sexist comments.

Which is being echoed endlessly by the DLC apologists who defend the antics of some Democrats as they appease the right.

The argument being that "we are only trying to win over the moderates" is, in essence, the same as "I was just following orders." In this instance the "orders" issued by the rightwing voters they are trying to appease on such issues as abortion, gun control, affirmative action, the war in Iraq, "defense" spending, foreign affairs, separation of church and state, etc.

Their efforts have reduced the Democratic Party to the "not as bad" Republican Party which stands for nothing except attaining and retaining power.

To paraphrase Harry Truman, "If you run a Republican(R) against a Republican(D) you end up with a Republican."
