Slidell Memorial Hospital - fully operational
More good news from a suburb of New Orleans. The locals are doing a great job of heading in the right direction.

4. Thank you very much
We lost a lot of trees, power, water but our house sustained very minor damage. Nothing compared to our neighbors to the south. All the utilities are back up and running. Got a big clean up job outside but we'll get to it. I'm enjoying the air conditioning right now. Your post is greatly appreciated.

2. Are you in Slidell?
Apparently, my town has "adopted" your town.

Zanesville adopts Slidell, La.
City seeking volunteers to help Katrina cleanup effort

By CARLO MUÑOZ
Staff Writer

ZANESVILLE - While it took a national disaster to bring Ryan and Danielle DeVoll to Zanesville from their home in Slidell, La., the kindness and compassion of the community has made them happy to call it home.

Zanesville Mayor Butch Zwelling said Monday city officials have chosen the small town east of New Orleans - Slidell - to help rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

A lifelong resident of Slidell, Danielle DeVoll said: "There's a big difference in distance (between Ohio and Louisiana), I'm amazed that people in this state have contributed so much."

Project coordinators plan to take a force of 100 to 200 local volunteers to Slidell, to aid in reconstruction efforts. With 30 local residents already signed up, officials said volunteers could be on the ground as early as next month.

Wish I could come and help, but I can't get out of this store for more than 36 hours in a row.

5. God Bless Zanesville!
I live across the state line in Mississippi just a few miles up the road. We used to live in Slidell and we still truly love that town. It is an awesome gem just a half hour from the French Quarter.

A great big THANK YOU to Zanesville. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

6. I'm enjoying the air conditioning
The brush and the chain sawing can wait. I'm listening to the New Orleans radio station and there has been a lot of good news from all parts of the region. There is a great deal of good deeds being done by a large number of people.

I put some potted sun coleous in the garage when we left. When we got home Tuesday, they looked like they were dead. I put them outside, soaked them and went outside Wednesday morning and they greeted me with beautiful and healthy foliage and a look like, "where have you been?" Mother nature works both sides of the aisle.

I'm really bracing myself for that first trip to Slidell. My head and money are in Mississippi but my heart and soul are in Louisiana.

7. It's good to know good people are helping each other down in LA and MS.
During the first week post-Katrina, I listened to the WWLTV live stream TV/Radio coverage. It was excellent. Local (non-RW) news radio has really proved how valuable a service it provides during a disaster or emergency situation.

Those sun coleus must be very tough. They just took a little nap in the garage while waiting for your return!

We hope to travel to Slidell when Mr. CottonBear's sister is able to go home. I can only imagine how it will be for you to travel to Slidell for the first time. I wonder if the historic Amtrack train station (not to mention the tracks) survived? I love riding the Crescent down to Slidell.

Take care and enjoy that AC. :)
