Poll question: Please Respond to this query-
When we have a natural disaster like the one in New Orleans, should we have the airlines, trains and bus lines automatically start with "emergency evacuation service?"

This would be after everyone who cannot leave on their own is left and the service would be temporary and rebated by the government afterwards. And if need be they can then bring everyone back.

They could post their information on the web, give to the city/state officials to have broadcasted and have people sign up online or by phone for tickets to make it work in a more streamlined manner.

1. That's a good idea but ...
The area where I live (the Outer Banks of NC)is now being sideswiped by Hurricane Ophelia, and we have none of those modes of mass transit available (ever). We have no trains, no bus lines, and the nearest large airport (Norfolk, VA) is more than 100 miles away.

I think maybe it would work for larger, less rural places, but not here.

4. Well, Greyhound or other lines could
create lines that are only used in an emergency.

2. public transport
In hurricane territory, people without automobiles should be sent a transportation voucher by mail they can use for emergency evacuation by public transportation. Calling your local public transport office should be all you need to do. The number of seats required (pets included) can be specified on the voucher and this master list can be used to deploy buses to pick people up.

Railway and private bus company vouchers can be issued if the person can get a ride to the station. The city can reimburse private carriers after the crises and upon proof the people used their voucher to return home.

I don't know what would work in earthquake country.

As for airlines... what airlines? Aren't they all bankrupt?

3. Not Southwest and it would be smart of them do offer.
They could get a huge new base just by doing that.

And it would be a great slogan: "Saved By Southwest"
