I can't believe that the Dem leadership isn't already criticizing the inappropriateness of Bush's speech tonight.
There is no logistical benefit to Bush being in NO. There is no logistical benefit to him speaking and giving a list of what has been done and what will be done. He's already made several of these after the fact speeches.
The ONLY reason why he is speaking tonight and the ONLY reason why he is speaking in NOLA especially is to respond to the emergency of his plumetting poll numbers. That is all. This is a blatant attempt to help him politically, to be "seen" as a leader because it is way too late to actually lead now.
Giving a speech at all to convey known information should be criticized. Giving the speech in the French quarter, in front of the Cathedral in Jackson Square is unforgivable. Think of the logistics they have gone through just to get him there, set everything up, light the damn place up for the cameras all to exploit the devastation as a backdrop, a set to be used for his political benefit. This is so sick. If he must give a speech tonight to re-hash known information at least he could do it from the White House. To do it from New Orleans is so tasteless. It also should be contrasted that he didn't go into the city until the immediate crisis ended.
It's scheduled for 9pm EST. It will be approaching sunset in NOLA at that time. How will they light him? Use generators for the photo op instead of the real work there? How has his presence impacted the real work needed to be done? Will it be taped to avoid the lighting issue? Then that shows even more what a pointless poiltical stunt this is to just secure the backdrop.
All dems should be screaming about this. After the "Mission Accomplished" fiasco wouldn't they have more courage?
