Flame War Time: Our problem with the MSM is all in our heads.
Hey, I am here to say:

Our problem with the MSM is that is all in our heads*.

I am just saying this because when you look here at DU people complain about the MSM. Then I go over and lurk at Free Republic, and all their posts complain about the MSM. So, I conclude that because both sides are complaining about the MSM, the MSM must be doing a pretty good job of reporting what we do and don't want to hear.

* with the exception of FOX News.

1. All reality is filtered through each person's perceptions.
Although I must say that the news organizations, as opposed to the hounding of Clinton, do seem to be sucking *'s dick a lot more over a lot more deadly lies, blunders, mistakes, etc.

2. In college I heard of a study about perceptions of media bias...
...and it basically confirms what you found, that everyone thinks it's biased against them no matter what.

I like that Media Matters and all that points out things, but we have to realize that sometimes we have to work around the media ourselves if something is reported inaccurately or inadequately (as well as realizing that sometimes unfavorable things are reported accurately).

18. After the war started, I started emailing people I know...
...articles like you'd find on Buzzflash and what-not, usually articles from foreign newspapers and even domestic print news like the New York Times and Washington Post which cover things that don't reach the TV news, or even which just aren't covered in the kind of depth you see in the better newspapers - I try to stick with news somewhat more than opinion. I think it's a productive thing to find out which of our friends would be interested in recieving stuff, like a handful of links once a week or so (I don't usually send it unsolicited cuz that just turns people off I've found), to emphasize a lot of the important news and to work around the TV news. I don't think the TV news has a definite bias as far as left or right, but I think it's biased toward things like existing popular opinion for ratings, toward brief attention spans, toward titillation, toward getting things out quickly, etcetera.

19. Ahhh
marshmallows anyone?

This is why I like du. A little of this, a little of that.

I do read a lot of RW blogs and I will agree, they are all convinced of the liberal media bias.

So I'm inclined to think that much of the time they cancel each other out.

That said, I think the media is basically a gossip machine and everybody loves juicy gossip. Nobody want to hear how good it's going. It's more interesting to hear who's cheating on their wife, yada yada yada. So if the media always does the "if it bleeds it leads" schtick, and they do it 24-7 it can skew our perspective.

I like C-span. But I'll admit freely, sometimes I just don't know what sources to trust. In my life I've lived through a couple of newsworthy events; one was a school shooting at my school. The local paper and tv news got just about every fact dead wrong. It was very enlightening.

Basically, the media stinks. And I agree that the corporate control doesn't help; either do ratings. News shouldn't get ratings.

30. Considering that the media purposely doesn't report on
the small print whenever Bushco passes laws that will eventually fuck us over, from the Telecommunication Act under Clinton to the Patriot Act, the bankruptcy bill, etc etc etc. They keep it to themselves.

There are so many examples of their Bushco loving corporate ways, I can't even begin, this whole thread is STUPID!

34. No you are right about that
they don't do the small print stuff, and they are late with a lot of stories. But take a look at it from the reichwing side. They are complaining right now (I was listening to the enemy Rush today) about Congressman William Jefferson using National Guard to visit his house in NOLA. That will probably be covered a tiny bit, but it will fizzle out, because its not really newsworthy. They will be frustrated at the MSM, but that's the way it goes. Both sides want more attention to their issues.

38. But the right is literally killing people and destroying our country
until the media calls them out for the corporatist brand of fascism, they are schilling for Bush.

Dude, my blood pressure goes up too high when I read crap like this.

It's not true, so stop posting junk like this, you only vindicate the RW and then freepers use your post to make points about how even some DUers agree.

It's dumb and counter productive.

10. You have watched the MSM (corporate media), say, from 2000 on, yes?
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 04:44 PM by Skip Intro
You have seen the treatment of Gore versus treatment of little lord moron, yes?

You have seen the non-critical, in lockstep war-cheerleading in the run-up to the fraudulent attack on Iraq, yes?

11. MSM is Corporate Media...
They care about making money...not the truth or unbiased reporting. Their bread is buttered with repuke money.

Some is unbiased and tells the truth...but too many times have I seen so-called journalists being the mouth pieces of the regime in power.

13. The corporate media present the entire spectrum...
of American political thought, all the way from Conservative to Extremely Conservative. (Tip of the hat to Jello Biafra, who's the first person I heard use this, in reference to editorial pages.)

We don't like them because they're conservative, and right-wingers don't like them because they're not far-right enough. I mean, hell, most of these idiots think Bill Clinton was a "communist"!
