A little advice for our "friends" in the GOP
The way things stand now, I think they need to pull a "Nixon" if they want to salvage their chances in '08.

Cheney should resign for "health reasons," allowing Bush to appoint someone like, say, John McCain as his new veep. Then Bush, whose approval ratings are sinking like a stone, should resign. That would give the new prez some time to build support and for the electorate to forget about the disaster named GW.

They better not wait too long, though.

Of course, I don't expect them to take my advice... otherwise I'd just keep my trap shut. But hey, this way I get to say "I told you so."

1. They may not care about their chances in 2008.
Maybe they've finally woken up to what incompetent boobs they are at governance.

2. I am worried about something else
I am worried that they don't care about '08 because participating in an election isn't part of their plan to stay in power.

3. They're too busy feeding at the trough to feel shame.
Protection for ordinary workers have been disassembled. Privateers infest every government function, assuring about a 20-25% profiteering overhead on public services. Billions in unaccounted tax dollars and the hemorrhaging continues.

... and the ship of state has not even begun to change course!

4. I don't think anything has changed, really
Look, bush was incompetent and corrupt BEFORE the election in 2000, just as incompetent and even more corrupt in 2004, and still got into the whitehouse twice, by hook or by crook (mostly crook, IMHO). The corporate "mainstream" media is still owned by the same greedy conglomerates who have an interest in promoting the GOP agenda, and will do its best to paint whatever nominees the Dems come up with as traitors and/or whiners. The voting machines are still programmed by the same republican-owned companies, using proprietary source which is not subject to code review. This has not changed.

The GOP message is still fairly popular regardless of the messengers. Many people haven't caught on that bush's big tax breaks go to about 5% of the taxpayers, and plenty of those that have figured it out actually approve of this for various reasons. Americans, especially white males, seem to like the idea of killing brown people in other countries and taking over their natural resources by force. This has not changed.

The RNCC is still collecting plenty of donations. Organized labor is still in a shambles. Americans still rely largely on cheap gas for transportation and republican news outlets for information. This has not changed.

So it's going to take something bigger than what we've seen already to swing the pendulum back.
