Only 40 percent of Americans can name more than four of the Ten Commandments.
(I can do better than those people and I'M A MUSLIM!)

Only half can cite any of the four authors of the Gospels.

Twelve percent believe Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife.

Three quarters of Americans believe the Bible teaches that “God helps those who help themselves.” (This idea actually originated with Ben Franklin)

3. Most people are Christian in this country because they believe they

can get something out if it. Whether it is insurance that they go to heaven or praying that their team wins so they can win a bet with a friend, Americans often pretend to be religious for selfish reasons. I say this as a loosely practicing Catholic.

What's their point? So there are a lot of religious people in the country. And the point is....? They use these kind of statements to try to justify things like 10 commandment monuments in courthouses, and "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Like I say, I don't care if 99% of the country is religious. That still doesn't take away a basic tenant on which this country was founded - seperation of church and state.

9. White-wing fundy christians are biblically illiterate, too

Most who call themselves Evangelicals have never even read God's word from cover to cover so how could they possibly know what the Bible teaches. Even when Bible study is done many now use paraphrased versions which is not God's word at all but just someone's opinion of what the Bible said through their own preconceived theology. Those in most churches mostly believe what their pastors and leaders tell them rather then what the Bible actually says. The Evangelical church for the most part has unfortunately become biblically illiterate.


It all comes down to one thing. Many Evangelicals no longer know the scriptures and/or do not know them well enough to correlate other scripture passages or keep them in proper context. Pick and choosers, that's we in The Church of the Holy Donut ("all religions are based on dough." ), call them.
