Is anyone watching Ted Koppel's ABC special on Katrina - what went wrong?
This program is sparing no one.

A FEMA official in a press conference with Gov. Blanco and Sen. Landrieu is shown saying that the metropolitan NOLA area is NOT flooding and that water levels are actually going down in some areas. Gov. Blanco nods her head.

Then they show the aerial footage of downtown NOLA... FLOODED.

Chertoff is shown saying that the 17th st. canal breach occured sometime late Mon. or Tues. morning. A flash flood memo document is shown, along with a report saying that the first breach occurred around 8 a.m., with the second at around 2 p.m.

Damning footage of Bush's comments in San Diego.

***A Dept. of Homeland Security official is the one who issued the order to divert people to the convention center.*** (This was new info. to me, I'd always assume the Mayor issued the order.) Koppel calls this decision well-intentioned, but disastrous.

Showing how a dot-com millionaire establishes communications for city officials.

6. I saw an article about a week or so ago...........
about Brian Williams. He admitted they did try to promote the administration's agenda after 9/11 and the beginning of the Iraq war.

In this article, he declared that 'the gloves are off' especially after the Katrina disaster. And I have noticed other journalists don't seem so eager (anymore) to promote the right wing agenda.

Let's hope they continue to feel this way.

7. Do you remember where the article was?
I'd love to read it. Rarely do reporters actually admit that they were deliberately promoting the GOP agenda - at least not in print. They were too frightened that they would loose their jobs for being honest since the stations and sponsors call the shots on what's reported. At least they did until Katrina so it appears. We can only hope...

3. Convention center
Those inside the Superdome were supposed to be bused to the Astrodome in Texas. No buses showed up.

Thousands of people showed up at the convention center. Disastrous decision. City never envisioned this. No one was checked upon entrance.

Total chaos.

4. Continuing saga
City officials went to Office Depot, which had already been broken into and "looted/found" some equipment to take back to headquarters at the Hyatt.

Back at Hyatt, Mayor Nagin was finally able to make and receive calls (remember, thanks to that dot-come millionaire guy who found one working phone line at the Hyatt where the Mayor and city officials had moved their headquarters - next to the Superdome).

They receive a call from Air Force 1.

"Thursday would be the bleakest day yet...."

Shows Bush saying "I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees." Koppel says Prez was correct. No one anticipated the breach of the levees, but they did anticipate they would overflow, causing flooding.

5. Daaayum! This is a terrific piece of journalism!
Love that deputy mayor!

What really blows my mind is that this program, falling as it does in the hour before the chimperor's big speech, is a truly extraordinary reality-based inoculation against the inevitable bullshit that will spew once bush* opens his piehole.

Ted Koppel must be still pissed!

for Bush. No? I'm so confused.

9. if koppel did his job, he woulda been fired
somehow, these little men gotta live with themselves: bush never won the presidency, it was given him, and koppel was one of those who gave it....the pig deserves a quick trial and execution, along with so many others.....
