236. Chimpspeak
Chimp says: We have also witnessed the kind of desperation no citizen of this great and generous nation should ever have to know — fellow Americans calling out for food and water, vulnerable people left at the mercy of criminals who had no mercy, and the bodies of the dead lying uncovered and untended in the street.

We say: No shit.

Chimp says: In the task of recovery and rebuilding, some of the hardest work is still ahead and it will require the creative skill and generosity of a united country.

We say: In other words, we (the feds) will collect the tax, and you (the people) do the work.

Chimp says: Evacuees who have not yet registered should contact FEMA or the Red Cross. We need to know who you are, because many of you will also be eligible for broader assistance in the future.

We say: Who are the many of them who will be eligible for broader assistance? Those who need not quite as much assistance. In the words of MaMa Bush – “these people were underprivileged to begin with …” , i.e. any pittance of help will work just fine for them.

Chimp says: Federal funds will cover the great majority of the costs of repairing public infrastructure in the disaster zone, from roads and bridges to schools and water systems.

We say: What percentage constitutes a “great” majority? 90%? 80%? Maybe 51%?

Chimp says: Our goal is to get the work done quickly. And taxpayers expect this work to be done honestly and wisely, so we will have a team of inspectors general reviewing all expenditures.

We say: Who exactly are these “inspectors general”? Isn’t that a rather generic label?

Chimp says: Clearly, communities will need to move decisively to change zoning laws and building codes, in order to avoid a repeat of what we have seen.

We say: Typically, changing zoning laws is the work of a zoning commission, generally populated by developers and people who sleep with them.

Chimp says: As all of us saw on television, there is also some deep, persistent poverty in this region as well. And that poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America. We have a duty to confront this poverty with bold action. So let us restore all that we have cherished from yesterday, and let us rise above the legacy of inequality.

We say: Nice platitudes, no plan.

Chimp says: To help lower-income citizens in the hurricane region build new and better lives, I also propose that Congress pass an Urban Homesteading Act. Under this approach, we will identify property in the region owned by the federal government, and provide building sites to low-income citizens free of charge, through a lottery. In return, they would pledge to build on the lot, with either a mortgage or help from a charitable organization like Habitat for Humanity. Homeownership is one of the great strengths of any community, and it must be a central part of our vision for the revival of this region.

We say: They couldn’t get out because they couldn’t afford a car, or if they had one, didn’t have the funds to stay at a hotel once they got out, but by golly, the feds will let them get a mortgage!

Chimp says: City and parish officials in New Orleans and state officials in Louisiana will have a large part in the engineering decisions to come, and the Army Corps of Engineers will work at their side to make the flood protection system stronger than it has ever been.

We say: Yes, the Army Corps of Engineers, whose funding you just cut again to pay for this “stronger than ever protection system”.

Chimp says: In a time of terror threats and weapons of mass destruction, the danger to our citizens reaches much wider than a fault line or a flood plain. I consider detailed emergency planning to be a national security priority. Therefore, I have ordered the Department of Homeland Security to undertake an immediate review, in cooperation with local counterparts, of emergency plans in every major city in America.

We say: Let’s see. We’re going to have the Department that fucked this whole thing up in the first place do a review to make sure all’s well. Brilliant.

Chimp says: It was not a normal hurricane and the normal disaster relief system was not equal to it.

We say: No, it wasn’t a normal hurricane, and the Feds had plenty of warning. “Normal” disaster relief system? We’ve spent the last four years “making America safer at home” by developing this level of “normal” disaster relief?

Chimp says: Four years after the frightening experience of September 11th, Americans have every right to expect a more effective response in a time of emergency. When the federal government fails to meet such an obligation, I, as President, am responsible for the problem, and for the solution. So I have ordered every Cabinet secretary to participate in a comprehensive review of the government response to the hurricane.

We say: Oh, feel so much better now. The same unqualified lackeys that ran the response are going to review it. Once again, brilliant!

Chimp says: The United States Congress also has an important oversight function to perform. Congress is preparing an investigation, and I will work with members of both parties to make sure this effort is thorough.

We say: And we can’t have an independent commission, because, why?

Chimp says: Thank you, and may God bless America.

We say: God save us from men like you!

162. He had the authority to act before and failed to do so.

He could have pushed for the levee improvements to be funded, instead he blocked them, one of the many things he blocked to help pay for the tax cuts for himself and his rich allies.

He could have planned ahead of Katrina's landfall and responded quickly or AT LEAST delegated the responsibility to someone more intelligent. He could have skipped yet another vacation.

Why does he think he's entitled to so much vacation time? Isn't there any rules about how much vacation the President can take?

239. Republicans have morphed from political party to cult
7 ELEMENTS OF A CULTIC GROUP

1) A centralized form of leadership that rules with unquestioned authority
- Worship of Bush, who can do no wrong

2) A body of convictions, beliefs, and practices set forth boldly as "the truth"
- compassionate conservatism, which is neither.

3) A compelling presentation of the group vision to prospects that is inviting and challenging
- media manipulation, stage sets, phony morality and religiosity, mission accomplished

4) A series of manipulative socializing sessions to instill psychological dependence on the group
- "patriotic" rallies, political churches, Fox News Channel

5) A definable process of group dynamics used to unethically control and manipulate members
- Arabs, Muslims, blacks, hispanics, gays...They're out to get you!

6) A history of abuses of authority by group leaders freely using deception and fear tactics
- 9/11 manipulations, instilling irrational fears, Democrats can't keep you "safe"

7) A history of psychological and spiritual abuses of group members that destroy lives
- no health insurance, no flood insurance, stagnant wages, credit card companies charging 30%, gas at $3.00, but they still love the Great Leader!

And now that King Dumbass** has been in there, they're gonna have to clean it up just as though it was in an area that flooded. Talk about your toxic gunk!

I watched the speech with the sound off to track Bush's Swiv-O-Mandible™ (I counted 11 times, ftr, but I could've missed a couple) and I only started counting the snakelike tongue-darting about ten minutes in--he did it 40 times in roughly 20 minutes!

I know I'm a misfit weirdo for counting, but it sure beat the hell out of actually listening to his bullshit. :P

212. This is just another opportunity for him to further bankrupt the
government. Certainly, the storm damage needs to be repaired. Cities need to be rebuilt. It would have been much cheaper to reinforce the levies, but if they don't revoke the tax cuts, the federal government is done for. I'm starting to think that's not such a bad idea. States can keep their money and take care of themselves. What could LA have done with all the money from its citizens federal income tax to keep the levies from breaking. God, I feel like the world is turning upside down. Doesn't that sound like something a Republican would say? Everything's all out of whack. I think I need to lay down.

102. Once a moran, always a moran
I don't know about you, but if my president were speaking to the nation on a matter of historic import (and Katrina is right up there with the great Frisco quake or the Chicago fire -- that kind of historic) then I would want to see a leader standing there, not the neighbor trying to tell me how to fix my car when I'm the one under it getting greasy. This may sound superficial, but George, please dress in a suit, okay? Shirtsleeves may work for your daytime photo op -- god forbid you should be actually working instead of wasting your time posing -- but you sure don't look the part of the leader of the free world. Buy a tie, alright? Have Pickles pick one out for you at Wal-Mart.

On the other hand, you look stupid in a suit, too. Never mind.

He tried to exude a fake compassion of which he he failed utterly.

He talked about how we will rebuild & how we will spend a sum of money (not enough to really fix it & it will all go to contractors - I am sure that got left out)....

I am sure he did not mention the environmental catastrophe & how New Orleans is not fit for human habitation....

He probably invoked God & maybe the unity after 9/11 & how we must come together as a nation - & did he say that it will ultimately be a better New Orleans...

I am not going to submit myself to listening to a word of this man's pure crap EVER again - It is pointless.

It is collapsing around, us. PATHETIC

There are now 450,000 displaced poor and destitute Louisiana families who are stuck in areas far away from the state of Louisiana who will in the coming months and years become the Amerikan Palestinians, no place they can call home and no home to return to.

185. Another crazy ass speech
You know Bush will try to bring the people of New Orleans relief but what the people of America need is relief to be away from Bush. To have that God Blessed relief to the fact that that man is finally gone would makes us all feel so much better. Just to be able to wake up to the fact that we don't have President Bush in office anymore is a relief for anyone to know. And what would be even better is if we had a Democratic President like John Kerry as President and if the Democratic Party started to take over Congress. Because we cannot continue to live like this anymore with these republicans in office running this country and ruining the economy and the world and the wildlife and everything we hold so dear. Our very lives are at stake having these people in office. I'm amazed that they haven't even impeached Bush already because of how bad a job he has done lately. His approval ratings are at 38% and yet they still haven't impeached him yet. That just goes to show you how stupid Congress is. I swear the 2004 election was so pathetic i can't even believe what happened back then but it's true. I can't believe we got a bunch of republicans in office all because the votes were hacked. It's pathetic how this country works :puke: . I hope to hear from you soon, good luck in all you do.

Signed,
Greg

188. Curious backdrop of Stonewall Jackson--he was shot by his own men
Interesting choice, forward planners! :applause:

Note to SS: This is merely an observation of historical record.

<http://www.vmi.edu/archives/Jackson/tjjfaq.html>

<snip>

Who shot General Jackson?
Jackson died as a result of "friendly fire." He was shot at Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863, by an unknown member or members of the 18th North Carolina Infantry Regiment; he died on May 10th. The order to fire was given by Maj. John D. Barry, and many of his men fired at the same time. Jackson was struck by three smoothbore musket balls. Barry died two years after the war at the age of 27; his family believed his death was a result of the depression and guilt he suffered as a consequence of having given the order to fire.

Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 10:05 PM by indigonation
I'm glad that at least superficially, the Bush admin is trying to do the right thing. Do I buy it? not really.

But...

I can't wait to hear the loyal bushbot base become a friggin bunch of blatant hypocrites. Here is the opportunity to bitch and moan about liberal spending, especially on the poor, and I'll bet you a million dollars the brownshirts will be spinning in lockstep support of it tomorrow. I might even listen to racist Oxy-boy to hear his high hypocrite praises.

PS (Halliburton is donating the million dollars)

Now these folks are falling all over themselves because they're going to get a fucking MOBILE HOME in a hurricane area. Why isn't anyone asking the REAL QUESTIONS?? WHY THE FUCK DON'T THE REPUBLICANS CARE ABOUT POVERTY AND INEQUALITY?? WHY did it take a fucking PR NIGHTMARE for them to do anything???? pardon my french.

his approval rating. He doesn't really give a shit, they're ONLY poor people. It's not like ANY bush family member knows anyone like that. But if it affects his approval rating, it suddenly becomes, job #1. He at least has to make the appearance that he cares, and that's what this entire, stage-lighted farce was all about.

Also I had to take the recycling out. The garbage too. Then I had to read the comics. And Dear Abby. And the Bridge column even though I don't play bridge. I also felt the need to rearrange my books in my library.

I missed it too. Oh darn.

But the good people at DU keep me informed.

SURE, HE'LL REBUILD NEW ORLEANS.....

WITH OUR FUCKING TAX MONEY GIVEN TO HIS BUDDIES AT HALLIBURTON, AND THE LIKE!

I'm sure he's glad as hell to have this opportunity to spend $200 billion of OUR fucking money to rebuild New Orleans into a corporate theme park with no black people in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HE CAN GO BURN IN EVERLASTNG TORMENT WITH THE REST OF THE FASCIST PIGS.

225. Re: "Now EVERYONE hates him..."
"Who's left?"

Let's see... Wealthy people. Corrupt people. Those who will profit directly and indirectly. From contracts, from having an "explanation" for increasing prices and lowering wages.

Those who make it damned expensive to be poor these days? Banks which charge $32 for a short-term loan of 50c (aka overdraft fee.) Banks which charge people without accounts $5 to cash a paycheck *written by the bank's own customer*. Credit card companies which double interest rates as soon as an account gets behind, topped with $25 monthly fees each month it stays behind. Property owners who charge 10% more for rent paid one day late. People who will buy your belongings for a fraction of their worth when you desperately try to get your head back above water.

(...and that's just based on examples from my week!)

PS For some reason recently I keep getting the song World Destruction stuck in my head, in particular, "The rich get richer, The poor are getting poorer..."

238. It made my hair stand on end when I heard
a presidential adviser (of a succession of presidents, seemingly) on Larry King, say that they (the neocons) might not now be able to remain in government for a further 20 to 30 years, as they'd set their sights on!!!!!!!

But the more I hear Bush claim that he's going to put things right, the pre and post Katrina disaster, and everything else, the more Einstein's dictum comes to my mind: "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." This, of course, is all the more compounded when the genuine willingness to get things right is suspect, since they and their cronies have made and continue to make hay - an awful lot of hay - financially, out of the disasters.
