20. Part of FDR's New Deal
The Works Progress Administration (later Works Projects Administration, abbreviated WPA), was created on May 6, 1935 with the signing of Executive Order 7034.

It was the largest and most comprehensive New Deal agency. Headed by Harry L. Hopkins, it was a "make work" program that provided jobs and income to the unemployed during the Great Depression. WPA projects primarily employed blue-collar workers in construction projects across the nation, but also employed white-collar workers and artists on smaller-scale projects, and even ran a circus.

According to author Nick Taylor, "The WPA built 650,000 miles of roads, 78,000 bridges, 125,000 buildings, and seven hundred miles of airport runways... It presented 225,000 concerts to audiences totalling 150 million, and produced almost 475,000 works of art. Even today, almost sixty years after it ceased to exist, there is no part of America that does not bear some mark of the WPA."

With unemployment figures falling fast due to World War II-related employment, Franklin D. Roosevelt shut down the WPA on December 4, 1943.

Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 08:37 PM by Patsy Stone
I didn't watch (really, just couldn't) but I've been saying a WPA since the beginning. I figured that it was a bit too FDR in the face of this administration's desire to completely erase his legacy. Did he really propose this?

At least it's a better model to work from than the previous Atilla the Hun design. Oy.

I finally read the speech. Aside from the creepy backdrop and badly buttoned shirt, I don't think I missed much at all.

Nice to see you. Sorry about your tsuris and strife. Anytime you need a hug, you know where to come. :loveya:

7. Scarborough and Tweety basically laughing at the speech
Incredulous at the $200 billion- funny, they didn't raise an eyebrow about Iraq.

Scarborough wants federal oversight- funny, he isn't demanding it for Iraq.

29. Easy, end the war
and bring home the troops!!

Funny how Chris and Joe and Tucker never made a peep about the billions being wasted in Iraq!!

I hope now all that money will be spent here, to end poverty, to help the victims of the hurricane re-establish their lives.

Is some of that going to cover insurance claims? I hope not! Bring home the troops and end the neo-con reign of terror.

I didn't watch it ~ but it seems Bush has become a liberal. Maybe his trips to NO affected him the same way they affected all those reporters. He's had an epiphany!!

What is a liberal? A Conservative who's been arrested!!! Or, is about to be??

all this makes me laugh. Whoever thought Katrina could result in a laugh.

Moral of story - Bush can't please anyone and he's incapable of bringing about consensus. He has polarized the country so much that now EVERYONE is pissed at him. He is reaping what he has sown.

34. I think it was on the early part of Tweetyville tonight
that a pundit (can't remember who) said that bush's previous broad support has shrunken to just his core base. To at least satisfy that core base and not lose it over big spending, his next Supreme Court nominee will be ultra-ultra-conservative. Oh great.

Because he's trying (or saying he is) to rebuild an American city! How stupid is that? Their just so afraid some poor black people will benefit from their precious taxpayer dollars. Guess what, money is green and knows no color.
