I love New Orleans, and I am happy that he made the promises he did in that speech.

Things could be a LOT worse. He could have gone along with Denny Hastert, and be quietly pushing behind the scenes to raze New Orleans instead of giving speeches like this one.

I almost think that the total failure of the government to respond properly in the first 5 or 6 days after the storm is what actually will save New Orleans in the end: after fucking up so badly early on, Bush feels irresistable pressure to bankroll a real recovery. It sounds awful, but in a way, those poor people at the Convention Center were the Jesus Christs of the Crescent City -- through their deaths, the city has been saved.

(What happened here? This post started off so happy and hopeful! Damn.)

The last time I remember physically reacting to a news report (besides much crying lately due to Katrina and other personal stories) was when reporters spoke after Timothy McVeigh's execution. They came to the microphone and did a play-by-play of his death. I, truly, threw up into the toilet. Was late for work that day.

Oh, and yeah, I stopped by the Freeper site - and they hate Shrub's proposal, but some are blaming Senators for "pork" - something liberals also hate.

I'm thinking about junior, how he surrounded himself with guys like Cheney and Rumsfield, biggest crooks in any administration. Both those guys are war profiteers and belong in jail.

And how Bu$h's management style more or less isolates him thus a dependence on these these profiteers for direction in what to do. Once that inner group made a decision, then all the other meetings with others was a "the decision is made, now do it". Thats his style. He is not into details at all. This came out in that book The Price of Loyalty by Suskind and O'Neil.

To be sure, junior himself has a lot of underhanded stuff in his business background, but show me a politician from Texas that doesn't.

I keep coming back to that picture of him in AF1 as it flies over New Orleans when he was on his way back to DC, and the look on his face as he saw the city in ruins. What was he thinking at that time?

Then there is another picture from a long time past, with his new born twins and he was looking at them as a young father might. What was he thinking then?

Do we really know this guy? Or is what we see more of the PNAC crowd and they have kept him in the dark about what they were doing?

I know the guy is not that empathetic toward others, but really, who is he? Deep down. Is he like his father, or does he want to be better than his father?

People here are waaaay too fixated on Bush's numbers. The electorate's ire at Bush will not automatically translate into our success in 2006. A lot of members of the House and Senate have been distancing themselves from Bush for a while, and more will do so when it becomes clearer that its the optimal survival strategy.

Furthermore, Bush's negatives aren't the same thing as favorable ratings for Democrats. If you asked me in 1997 what I thought of Clinton, I would have said I hated him, but that doesn't mean I'd vote GOP in '98 or for Bush in 2000. A lot of conservatives feel the same way about Bush. They're losing patience with the guy, but have absolutely no intention of hopping ship to the Democrats.

So what I'm proposing is that instead of worrying about Bush's poll numbers, we should be concerned with the popularity of the Republican party and support for conservative ideology. These things are not the same.
