I hate to say this, but Rove will beat the Democrats again
with this tactic started tonight.
Now he will force them to come out against spending programs which directly affect a core Democratic constituency.
The Repubs will get their marching orders, and our mostly spineless leadership will have no clue how to deal with it.
Investigations will be blocked.

At first I thought it was a big mistake, but the more I think about it...

1. Not Quite Correct
I don't think they are going to come out against it, but I wonder how anybody in congress is going to figure out how to pay for this.

I doubt the Democrats are going to oppose throwing all this money at a problem which is directed at their constituency. The repubs may be kind of freaked out about the financing though.

just need to question the source of the funding and let the 'pubs twist in the wind.

10. They don't need to come out against Bush on this. They need to make sure
he follows through and they need to devise some way to provide stringent oversight of where all that money will be going. They really need to establish enforceable requirements (quotas) some guaranteed number of qualified displaced people to be hired to do the work that needs to be done in LA, MS, and AL. No contractor should be hired to reconstruction withou being able to prove that a certain number of residents are working with and paid by the contractor.

28. I totally agree with you...
The dems don't need to fight this, as a matter of fact they should help push it through, because like a few others stated, the republican hounds will try and stop it partially, primarily because of the cost of what Bush said the fed govt would do. I would be pleased if even half of what GWB said tonight would happen, but again, i don't put trust in him, because he has lied many times in the past, but i'm not holding my breath.

Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 11:52 PM by Telly Savalas
It's not fucking rocket science: raise taxes on the wealthy and quit wasting so much goddamn money on a bloated military.

Edited to add the kitty pic:

Since Bush has bled us dry and is throwing away billions on Iraq.

Funny thing is, the true conservatives will be asking the same question.

6. Rx:
Dems support the proposal as long as:

1. The tax cuts are canceled immediately.

2. The estate tax is restored immediately.

3. Halliburton is made to open its accounts and made pay back the money it "lost".

They're hurting.

And the Dems don't need to come out against spending programs to criticize Bush. Watch: all the dough will come through private hands so the pals can take a cut.

8. No objections...
...to rebuilding New Orleans for the people who call it home. The problem lies in that pocketbook issue. Tax cuts and wars HAVE TO GO for us to be able to afford to take care of matters back at home. As with everything, Bush thinks he can speechify and have his spin doctors get up there and spew bullshit, spend like a drunken ho, and daddy's friends will bail him out...

13. Some major trading went on today...I'd bet the farm on it
The repukes have given up on SS reform...for now
The repukes have more or less blocked any independent Katrina commission
Now, bush comes out with a major liberal-like agenda.

The dems probably said they'd give up the fight on the commission if the repukes give up on SS reform. Since the dems know how bad the repukes are doing they may have told bush to get the ball rolling on real help to the gulf states.

There's always some cloakroom trading going on.

17. Is Rove pulling a "hail mary" play?
Shit who knows? First the chimp takes a half-hearted responsibilty for the lack of response, then he wades in tossing money and 'guvment programs about, like a lab chimp on LSD.

How 'bout this angle? Back door out of the mess that is Iraq? Money's got to come from somewhere. Better here than there. Given the unpopularity of the war dragging on the midterms, its a double play. Fix the Gulf here and out of desert...

31. My son likes to watch "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" and...
...there's an episode where one particularly dimwitted character stands around shouting "He'll destroy us all! He'll destroy us all! He'll destroy us all!", over and over for about a third of the cartoon. It drives you mad. Maybe I was a little too sharp but shit, this is real life where you work through problems, not drop to the ground like a baby with a diaper full of shit and cry about it.

Of course, a baby just wants to be changed. It takes an older mind not to be just disenchanted but to attempt to disenchant others under the guise of enlightenment.

40. It's not Rove. It's just Bush doing what he's always done: go into debt.
Why wouldn't he assume that there's lots of money available to pay for this? He's never actually had to experience any consequences for running up huge debts, whether when running an oil company into the ground or turning a surplus into a giant deficit in just three years. The only reason people are talking is that this is the first time where he's offered to spend money on something that isn't directly about lining the pockets of his rich friends. Whether NOLA actually sees any of these fine promises, well. That's another question, isn't it. But I don't think there's any plan here. Fuck things up, hurt people, deny, deny, make excuses, blame...then when all else fails, offer lots of money to make the nasty words and angry people go away. Hey, it's always worked for him before. Why shouldn't it work now? There's *always* money when you want it, right?
