Reaction to Bush's New Orleans Address
"The president picked a very inspiring spot to make this speech. The image is worth many words in terms of what Jackson Square and the cathedral mean to New Orleans and what New Orleans means to the nation. ... His three proposals are innovative and bold." — Sen. Mary Landrieu (news, bio, voting record), D-La.

The Gulf Coast region does not deserve to be treated as a laboratory for political opportunism or ideological experimentation. Now is the time for unity." — Joint statement by Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Leadership isn't a speech or a toll-free number. Leadership is getting the job done. No American doubts that New Orleans will rise again. They doubt the competence and commitment of this administration." — Sen.
John Kerry, D-Mass.

2. Money being appropriated for her state.
How would she look if she didn't thank him after saying "here's 200 Billion Dollars"? Somebody else can criticize. She can't.

5. She does not want to bite the hand that can bring money
to LA. She has been going back and forth in her reactions because of that. Not a pretty sight but probably understandable.

11. No. She's doing her job, and putting her constituency before her ego.
That's not dumb, that's what the people of New Orleans need right now.

10. She doesn't have the luxury of speaking the truth
Right now her job is to get as much money as she can for the people of her state. The people of New Orleans have suffered enough--how irresponsible would it be for her to make them suffer more just so she can insult Bush?

She's gotten her digs at him. The local press has shown it. The victims of this hurricane aren't fooled by Bush or any of his lies. Landrieu, Blanco and Nagin can praise Bush all Bush requires, and everyone knows what is happening.

13. What Landrieu said was very diplomatic and not untrue.
There were a lot of things she could have said that would have made * look like a real hero, but she didn't say it. Maybe I will have to say ruh roh for restraint. She said his three proposals were innovative and bold. She didn't say she believed he would follow through with them. I think it's going to be a wait and we'll see what he does proposition.
