Computer Experts Fear Recall Voter Fraud
Mon Oct 6, 5:25 AM ET

By RACHEL KONRAD, Associated Press Writer

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Punch-card ballots from Tuesday's historic recall election are sure to get a going-over by political activists, but some computer scientists think touch-screen voting machines deserve just as much scrutiny.

AP Photo

While punch-card ballots caused headaches for Florida election officials with their "hanging" and "pregnant" chads, 10 percent of the touch-screen machines in California don't produce paper printouts. And no printouts, the scientists say, would make a legitimate recount impossible.

"You can't do a meaningful recount if the question is about the integrity of the voting machines themselves," said David Dill, a computer science professor at Stanford University. He urged voters in the four counties using touch-screen terminals to vote with absentee ballots.

The concern of Dill and some of his colleagues was dismissed as overblown and irresponsible by county registrars and executives at the companies that sell and update the electronic voting machines.

None of the elections officials who supervise the 50,000 touch-screen machines serviced nationwide by Diebold Election Systems has reported glitches or computer hacks that have resulted in known miscounts or fraud, said Mark Radke, director of the voting industry division of North Canton, Ohio-based Diebold.

But according to a July study by Johns Hopkins and Rice universities, any clever hacker could break into Diebold's system and vote multiple times. Researchers found it was theoretically possible to insert "back doors" into software code that would allow hackers — or insiders — to change future voters' choices and determine the outcome.

8. I've been thinking this all along
Will the CA recall election FINALLY bring this HUGE issue into the spotlight? I know it will make this recall mess an even bigger mess but if this recall accomplishes nothing else, maybe, just MAYBE it will bring the touchscreen voting scandal to the forefront.

18. Receipts-NO, Ballots-YES
If people take receipts out of the precincts, then the foes of a verified paper audit trail scream about vote selling-

...unless it's VoteHere's system, which does give the voter a receipt but also creates something that is printed in code, must be taken to a list or screen to be verified, and does not leave any paper record at the polling place. It's called an "individual" audit trail and it's a trap because the voter cannot just READ that their vote was correct and it leaves no way to audit the ELECTION. Plus, there is no way to stop a "Diebold" because this system can show the voter one thing while another set of encrypted books does something else.

Voting is the one case where the voter cannot leave the polling place with their ballot. And please, everyone, don't use the term receipt or audit trail. We have to be very specific because these worms wiggle through ANY gap that is not hermectically sealed. A ballot is official, a receipt is not. An audit trail sounds pretty self evident but left to these guys, becomes an electronic record of the vote instead of a physical, verified in real time by voter, paper ballot.

A voter-verified paper ballot, that the voter can confirm, without assistance by machine or program, (Except for the blind) that prints the vote for all to read, (like in recounts) that is put in a ballot box and is used as the official record and ballot of the vote in recounts or robust audits of voting systems.

"Receipt, and audit trail," have come to be catch phrases for, "still can't confirm or audit an election." Ballots can be used in audits but an audit trail can be defined as NOT an official ballot.

I know it's confusing. Hang in there!

Pretty hard to find miscounts or fraud when you don't have any methods to show that. Oh, they joys (for fraudsters) of paperless voting!

It's appalling to me these crooks get away with this shit so damned easily.

"The machines have always been adjudicated to be reliable and accurate," said Townsend, who has supervised 19 touch-screen elections and five recounts since November 2000. "There's never been a single incident of what the scientists fear."

Anyone want to send her Bev's 2nd chapter?

35. Diebold left private information on 310,000 Texans on the Internet
Tinfoil apparently thinks that is funny.

If you live in Dallas, Plano, Richardson, McKinney, Wylie or thereabouts, people could access all the information they need about you to:
1) Stalk you successfully
2) Nab your kid from his school (listed on the site) in a custody dispute
3) Fake your identity to do credit card fraud.

Diebold: "We protect the Hope Diamond, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. And now we protect your vote."

Ask the 310,000 Texans how protected they feel.

34. Re: "Anyone want to send her Bev's second chapter"
Rachel Konrad was downloading my second chapter when the malicious and fake spam attack shut down blackboxvoting.com.

She called to ask what the heck happened. Due to the malicious site shutdown, she was not able to obtain the information.

She said the last thing she wants to do is provide a platform to lie. Be nice to her, and expose the liars.

"Anyone willing to use these machines without demanding a verifiable paper trail might as well stay at home.

The CEO of Diebold is a Bush Pioneer and recently held a $1000 a plate fundraiser at his home in Columbus, Oh. He is on the record as being committed to delivering Ohio's electoral votes to Bush. Of course, Diebold has a bid in to provide voting machines to Ohio. Honor and integrity from the Republican party....not likely."

48. Great to see the news getting out
I keep hearing mentions of paperless touch vote systems being challenged, ie. Lou Dobbs, NPR, etc. I get all excited, but then I get the distinct impression they are only telling the story because they want people to believe Dems cheated if Repubs lose.

Is that how the BBV story is going to break? Are we being prepped to accept Dems as election stealers? Oh the irony.
