Stripes letter: Iraq as "Terrorism U" (and Rush and Fox get bashed, too)

Buried treasure?

Fundamentally I agree with “We can’t abandon Iraq” (letter, Sept. 8). Abandoning Iraq is a bad idea right now; for totally different reasons, however.

Presently, Iraq is a “Terrorism University.” This country gives fundamentalists the opportunity to earn a “Ph.D.” in terrorist studies by giving these individuals the experience they need to hone their skills in terror. Iraq has turned into what Afghanistan was supposed to be, a training ground. That represents the true danger to the future of Western civilization.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “You’ve made your bed, now you have to lie in it.” This is exactly what the United States has created here. The reason the current administration gave us for this pre-emptive war was weapons of mass destruction proliferation by Saddam Hussein. Since we can’t find them, they must be buried, right?

The letter writer suggests the Baath Party, in order to support future terrorism activities of fundamentalist Islam, buried large stores of WMD in the desert. That can be refuted by using a little common sense and this simple piece of fiction:

“The year is 2050 and China has just taken over California. The president knows that there’s only one hope to possibly stop them. He gathers his political party to discuss options. Together they decide not to try to slow down the inevitable, but rather, hide all chemical, biological and nuclear weapons so that years later when half of them are dead, their power is stripped and the country has been taken over they can retrieve these weapons and give them to terrorists to commit atrocities in China.”

How ridiculous does that sound? To the letter writer: Rather than getting your information from Fox News or Rush Limbaugh, I suggest putting the remote down, turning off the radio, and using a little common sense. The truth is out there, you just have to read it.
