The GOP is finished after they "win" the abortion fight.
After this they have nothing to rally them, nothing to define them. They have already sacraficed all of their traditional conservative values for this Big Spending Big Government scam. They aren't for fiscal responsibility and they aren't for privacy. The "limited federal Government" thin only applies to corporations. They want to put cameras in your underwear and criminalize normal behaviour. The whole Religious freedom issue is a farce because the Christians are the ones doing all the persecuting. Their strong military and defense thing doesn;t seem to ring true anymore (if it ever did).

Abortion is the strong moral and religious touchstone; once they try to claim a victory on that issue they are done.

1. That's why things like gay marriage are being groomed as the
new abortion.

5. Yep
They use that when they don't have anything else to say. Sad how they can't offer anything else to our country anymore. :(

2. That's why they don't try too hard. Look at the partial birth bill.
The only reason the SCOTUS struck it down was because there were no provisions for the health of the mother. SCOTUS told them that, and they knew it when they wrote the bill. They could have fixed it, but they didn't for the same reason they didn't put it in the bill in te first place: THEY WANTED IT TO FAIL! Then they could bitch and moan about "activist judges" and get more campaign contributions so they can continue "fighting the fight".

They don't want Roe v Wade overturned. It's a cash cow for them.

6. Of course

I've always been saying that. What else would they have to talk about? What about all these "religious" people like Pat Robertson and the like? They wouldn't have anything going on either. Heh, so they'd never get rid of it. Plus, how else could they fill the Supreme Court with people they want? If they did ever overturn it they wouldn't ever win anything again. I'm sure they know this too.

4. Abortion is just the tip of the ice berg my friend
The Boss says it best they take a "god filled soul" and fear it with devils and dust. There are many many issues to unite the right, and bastardize my gods name.
Today it's abortion, tomarrow its a vicious attack on gay's, just look at the pledge of the alliegence stuff on DU. Ten commandments monuments and stem cell research, and video game violence. It's all rolled into one. Remember fear is a powerful thing. And the gop are masters of manipulation.

8. Tinfoil hat time...
is it possible that Roberts really will NOT vote to overturn Roe on established precedent grounds as some are thinking from his testimony?

and that this suits the Administration just fine because they don't WANT to win that battle, and give up a huge wedge issue? If Roberts can not overturn it, but look as if he wants to now to get confirmed, and claim he really would have loved to later personally, but....

Does this work for them? Aren't they more concerned with getting a Court that favors business, is anti-government, anti-regulation, will support them on a myriad of other issues?

Is this what they're up to? Just wondering...

9. Roberts is not the key to over turn Roe v. Wade...
That will be the job of the person who replaces Sandra Day O'Connor. The person who Bush* nominates for her position on the court will be telling because O'Connor has been somewhat pro-choice in her decisions over the years. If Bush wants to overturn Roe he can do it with her replacement but if he wants to use it as a wedge issue he will nominate someone who will be willing to chip away at the edges but not blatantly overturn Roe.

11. They'll hardly touch abortion.
They NEED abortion in order to mobilise their base; without it they'd start losing elections.
