In exclusive stunning admissions to The BRAD BLOG some 11 months after the 2004 Presidential Election, a "Diebold Insider" is now finally speaking out for the first time about the alarming security flaws within Diebold, Inc's electronic voting systems, software and machinery. The source is acknowledging that the company's "upper management" -- as well as "top government officials" -- were keenly aware of the "undocumented backdoor" in Diebold's main "GEM Central Tabulator" software well prior to the 2004 election. A branch of the Federal Government even posted a security warning on the Internet.

11. I don't know if they were Debold machines but in Miami County
OH 19,000 votes were loaded into the vote total after voting had stopped
and the machines were shut down ..... that had to be done @ the tabulator
level. Guess who had access to the central tabulators thanks to a
recently installed computer system? Ken Blackwell.

27. Yep - and a note for people who are just learning about
what a central tabulator is: A variety of different machines - punch cards, opscans, and DRE's all pass votes to/through the central tabulators -- so whoever has access to the Central Tabulators can alter vote tallies statewide.

So long as the Repuke party controls Ohio government and the Federal government (which they do, on both counts), then Diebold has nothing to worry about. Right now, they're merely smirking.

16. Wow...
....an anonymous person with a code name of DIEB-THROAT who not only hides who he is, but doesn't provide evidence.

For all you know, this could have been ME sending some bullcrap email. This might give Bev Harris an orgasm, but I'm not impressed. Brad BLog is the same guy who propped up some moron as proof he demo'd hacked Evoting software, only to fade off into obscurity because technically (from a software standpoint), the guy was less than a Bush-league (no pun intended) amateur.

As a fairly proficient software engineer with tons of experience in security systems, the first guy was barely qualified to run an install disk. Now, we have this guy who talks a good game with all the buzzwords, but provides no details. The "Cyber Security Alert" from US-CERT, is old busted news.

Evidence. I want to see evidence.

As nice as it would be to have someone willing to out this sort of corruption, he didn't even provide evidence of such a backdoor existing. The only way to find it would be to have someone get into the code and examine it line-by-line, which is something I doubt the government would sponsor at this point. You can't prosecute fraud if you've got nothing to prove it with.

59. Figure on Diebold's having written spaghetti code
Diebold has been in the security business since 1859, and they excel at manufacturing solutions that please and comfort their customers. In the banking industry, they're unparalleled--go to your bank and you'll find the vault, the safe-deposit box storage area, and a lot of the time the automation systems like the teller terminals and ATMs are all Diebold. If I am a banker and I put a Diebold vault in my bank, I can put money in it with absolute assurance that when we open the bank in the morning, that money will still be in there.

Diebold Election Systems also specializes in pleasing and comforting its customers--all of whom are Republican secretaries of state. Diebold election equipment has proven very reliable at electing Republicans.

I figure that they had to have known that eventually, some unknown bug in the Diebold code would allow a Democrat to slip through to a very high office, and that soul might wonder "how, exactly, is this system so good at electing Republicans?" If said soul in very high office decides to subpoena the source for examination by competent engineers, it had to have been engineered for illegibility. So count on it being full of pointers to routines that don't do anything, subroutines that contain three times the number of lines of code needed to work, and all sorts of other programmer's anomalies. In other words, it was designed NOT to be human-readable, on purpose.

23. So very recommended.
"I have seen these systems connected to phone lines dozens of times with users gaining remote access," said DIEB-THROAT. "What I think we have here is a very serious problem. Remote access using phone lines eliminates any need for a conspiracy of hundreds to alter the outcome of an election. Diebold has held onto this theory for years, but Diebold has lied and has put national elections at risk. Remote access using this backdoor means that one malicious person can change the outcome of any Diebold election."

/snip/

"Our source expressed emphatically that the threat to both previous and future democratic elections in the United States are still at stake and feels that the problem will not be corrected until Congressional action forces the company to do so.

"In my opinion Diebold's election system is one of the greatest threats our democracy has ever known, and the only way this will be exposed is with a Congressional investigation with subpoenas of not just Diebold officials but Diebold technicians."

If we have our way, that's just what will happen eventually, no matter how long it takes.

NGU.

32. I've been following Bradblog since the '04 election
Brad Friedman has ALWAYS vetted his sources before going public. He makes sure that whatever he's got can be confirmed, and he always requests opposing evidence on stories he's running with, in case there's something that refutes (i.e., the Clint Curtis story--go to Bradblog.com to see more about the programmer who was asked by Rep. Tom Feeney to create vote switching software). He is an excellent blogger journalist who makes sure that whatever he runs with is water-tight.

And knowing Brad's sense of humor, I'm sure HE made up DIEB-THROAT, not the source.

Let's just see where this takes us, okay? Give these guys a little time to show what they've got.

For any of this to have any impact, this person is going to have to do more than talk to a web blog. She/He is going to have to cough up some concrete evidence. There isn't much in that article that we didn't already suspect.

But the Feds need the whistleblower...if they're to go after the criminal backdrop. They know Blackwell had access to those backdoor tabulators, too.

65. Additional info from a security analyst
I posted this in another thread, but I'm not sure what happened to that one:

This is not your run-of-the-mill mistake in coding vulnerability that we see all the time from Microsoft and the like. This is a backdoor account. A backdoor account is not a mistake. It is purposely placed in code so the developer, or anyone that they choose to inform, can later gain access to the system and perform any activities they choose. As another note regarding the US-Cert alert, look at the last 2 lines:

"No workaround or patch available at time of publishing.

We are not aware of any exploits for this vulnerability."

First, the mere fact that they know that the backdoor account exists, there MUST obviously be a fix - REMOVING THE ACCOUNT FROM THE CODE.

Secondly, there is no exploit for this vulnerability because NO EXPLOIT IS NEEDED. It is not a bug that needs exploiting. It only requires a user to use the account that was created!

Mr. Kittenpants
