PLEASE HELP !!! *** NOLA Pet Rescue *** ACTION UPDATE *** 9/15

These dying pets still need our help! Some outdoor pets are being fed by kind-hearted members of the military and rescue groups that can get to them. Indoor pets are dying horrible deaths ... still waiting to be rescued.

There were promises by the Governor and Homeland Security that rescues would be ramped up.
There was to be a press release on 9/14...

But, in typical governmental fashion -- red tape and PR spin took over. Gov. Blanco decided to instead have a press conference on the 16th to publicize what was already being done. In other words, no increase in the rescue operation -- just PR spin about the work that was already being done. ... Which has been GROSSLY inadequate.



WHAT WE CAN DO:

Keep up the pressure on these people. Call, email, fax, etc.. Urge the feds to get the DOD (all branches of government, including DHS, FEMA and USCG) involved in rescuing animals on a massive scale.

Urge Gov. Blanco to get the National Guard involved -- also on a much larger scale. For some time now, there has been a handful of NG and other military involved. But a handful isn’t going to do it. These animals are dying and must be helped NOW!

The National Guard is anxious to help -- but Governor Blanco needs to issue formal orders. There are TENS OF THOUSANDS of animals that await rescue.


If these people can’t muster any compassion or empathy for dying animals, there are at least two other angles:

First: Pets are family members, and they are dying due to the inaction of idiots in power. People on the left and the right are PISSED!!! Whoever is seen as blocking these rescues is going to be hurt politically. Whoever orders and facilitates the massive rescue that’s needed is going to be seen as a hero. Do these politicians want to be remembered as the one who was responsible for their constituents’ pets death or rescue? Hero or villain? Haven't these idiots figured out yet that they are faced with that simple choice?

Second: The public health issue. Pets dying will add to the contamination of the area. That’s basically the message in a letter sent to Dubya this week ... So okay, crises make strange bedfellows. People on both the left and the right love their furbabies. So, with that warning to your gag reflex:

Senator Santorum (R-Penn) and Senator Ensign (R-Nev) delivered a letter on Tuesday to the Whitehouse, asking the Federal Government to assist the HSUS etc. with animal rescue in the flood zones.

As it stands now:
Despite thousands of calls, the Governor did not ask for the DOD's help (DOD = military and DHS);

The DOD is nonetheless helping out already after being asked for help by OTHER LA state agencies such as Dept of Ag and the State Vet.

The DOD will continue to help with animal rescue efforts and will use federal resources to do so.

Also despite thousands of calls to the White House, Bush has done nothing to help in this matter either. (Insert requisite guffaw here)


Please don't give up. Please think of the little lives that are still awaiting rescue. We need to keep up the pressure on these jerks in DC and in LA. Let them know that it's in their political best interest to do something. And please don't think that it's too late. Every day rescuers are pulling pets -- very weak, but still-alive, from these homes.

I've seen estimates that 50,000 pets were left trapped in home and that 'several thousand' have been rescued -- that leaves 48,000 pets trapped, dehydrating, starving, consuming and walking through contaminated water... Holocaust.

"Holocaust" is right. The numbers are staggering. We read about the valiant effort being made by these rescue groups, but then see the actual number of pets that they've been able to gather up -- and the numbers aren't even close to what's needed.

The best news I heard today is that gradually, some residents will be allowed back into their homes and businesses soon -- even St. Bernard Parish, to retrieve belongings, etc. Not all areas are included in that, though. ... I just hope that these babies can hang on long enough to be saved.

i am more saddened by the loss of the research than the loss of a pack of rodents. i think your view is extreme, and also think it is ridiculous. not that i don't know that there is unnecessary cruelty and stupidity. i think that animals should always be handled humanely. but i think some people have not accepted their own mortality, and fear death in all forms. i do not. i kill to live, so does every other organism. it is my birth right, and yours. i am as much a citizen of this planet, and part of the chain as a tiger.

133. Dogs and monkeys aren't "rodents."

Animal research is a multi-billion dollar cash cow. The results from the research are largely irrelevant because animal physiology is too different from human physiology. Substances that are toxic to humans are often not toxic to animals, and vice versa.

Much more reliable results can be obtained from computer models and tissue testing. The only reason that animal research continues is because it is incredibly lucrative.

It is hardly "extreme" to oppose this barbaric waste of life. (This is not, BTW, a promotion of vegetarianism. It is an opposition of unnecessary waste and torture.)

I'm very glad that your child survived. But I wouldn't attribute it to animal research. Alternative studies are more reliable.

17. This is why we don't evacuate....

next time you wonder why, this is it. We have lived on coastal Florida for over 25 years. No motel or shelter will take us with our pets, so we stay home. After going through all our hurricanes, we know full well that if you leave your house you become a prisoner in the shelters and if you leave your dogs, they won't let you come back home to save them. And you can see they aren't saving them either. We need to change the laws to force them to set up shelters for both people and their pets and force motels to accept pets during severe crises.

37. I can't believe that there isn't a single motel that wont take pets within

300 miles of you. Additionally, if it were true, sleep in the car - you can take turns. You assumed responsibility for your pets when you acquired them and allowing them to remain in an area which has been evacuated is simply irresponsible.

If "nothing happens", you'll be back home within 48 hours. If "something happens", your pet will be safe.

The kind of logic in "this is why we don't evacuate" is why thousands of animals in the areas affected by Katrina will die. Furthermore, people who could have gotten their animals out, but didn't, are now using up valuable animal rescue resources - resources that could have been focusing more on pets whose owners didn't have options.

I agree that policies regarding evacuations and pets need to change, but YOU can change what you do during the next evacuation - you don't have to wait for widespread societal change.

I agree with this poster! If I was given notice to evacuate and I had nowhere to go (that did not accept my pets), I would ride out the storm with my pets too. Please remember, most of these pet owners did not know that the levee's would break so "living in your car" is sort of a Monday Morning quarterback situation!

Hurricane Katrina. It's better to get out and be safe, and sleep in your car, than try to ride it out and risk the lives of your pets.

If you choose to risk your own life, and only your own life, that's your choice - although keep in mind that with "your choice" you may end up endangering the lives of those who have to come in to rescue you.

It is irresponsible to choose to risk the life of anyone or any animal that you are responsible for. This includes children, elderly people, and your pets.

It's that simple. There are children who died in Hurricane Katrina whose parents (who had the option to evacuate before the storm) decided to "ride out" the hurricane - was this a responsible decision? Absolutely not - it's negligence. It's no more responsible to endanger pets' lives.

There are animal rescuers now all over New Orleans and surrounding areas, as well as in MS, who are risking their own health and safety to save these pets. Some of the owners of those pets made IRRESPONSIBLE decisions regarding their pets' lives. Unfortunately, the pets are now paying the price.

This is an issue of acting in a responsible manner, and getting people to understand the consequences of quite frankly, stupid decisions, to ride out hurricanes when authorities have called for evacuation.

Yes, you might get lucky and be all right. But if not, you've endangered your life, the lives of any family members who stayed only because you were staying, as well as the lives of any children or animals who you had the responsibility of evacuating.

As for "not knowing the levee would break" - anyone who lives in NO knows that is a possibility. Additionally, had the hurricane hit NO directly, people would have died regardless of whether the levee broke. People died in FL when Katrina hit - and there was no levee to break.

When the authorities say EVACUATE, that is exactly what people should do. Yes, it gets tiresome if it happens several times in a summer. But that's part of life when you live in an area that gets hurricanes.
"Hoping" that everything will turn out all right will simply end up in some percent of those who have such "hope" dying (along with their pets).

where we live, in the southwest corner, Florida is 100 miles wide and 400 miles to Georgia up mostly 2 laned I-75. We get a lot of false alarms and then when there is a real one, I-75 is a parking lot. All that is ever evacuated around here are mobile homes and about 5 blocks of houses next to the beach. We are supposed to stay in town and go to a school shelter which won't take dogs or a local motel which doesn't take dogs. Our house is short one and a half blocks to the non-evacuation zone....and we have been through all of them fine.

I am in a dog club and I am going to ask our AKC representative to bring this up at the next delegates meeting. I think between the AKC, the Humane Society, and other large animal-related organizations, we can get FEMA to change laws to force them to help us: open some shelters to pets, make motels take us, let pets on some of the buses, trains, planes, etc out of town. It is easy to criticize us, but we will not be separated from our animals and they won't take them.

I live in the South East too. We constantly have hurricane notices! So far, I've only been affected by one hurricane and one ice storm. Whew! Lots of notices, but fortunately I only have personal loses from two natural disasters.

I am a volunteer for my local ASPCA. I'm going to bring this issue to their attention at our next meeting! I also donate to several other pet organizations and I'll be sending them my requests on this issue as well.

Humane Society begs for callers to the President, Gov, for help


On Wednesday, one of our Disaster Animal Response Teams in New Orleans rescued a St. Bernard from a rooftop – a dog they described as the most emaciated animal they had ever seen in all their years of handling animals. The veterinarian who treated the dog was shocked that the animal, who weighed just 40 pounds, was still alive.

Who helped us rescue this animal? It was several National Guardsmen, who heeded our rescuers’ pleas to take them through the water on a tank so they could get up on the roof to save the dog.

But the troops’ actions were not ordered by the National Guard – nor by the White House, the Defense Department, the Department of Homeland Security, or the state of Louisiana. In fact, despite our repeated requests, none of these entities has formally agreed to marshal their ground forces to help rescue the pets and other animals slowly starving to death in the affected areas.

At a press conference just a few hours ago, I implored the federal government to come up with the nation's first animal rescue plan. Now, I am writing to ask you to give them the same message: Please call or email President Bush and other officials today and urge them to help us before it’s too late.

Time is running out for these animals. Every hour that passes means more pets, locked behind closed doors in the disaster zone, will die of starvation. Our teams are working as hard as they can to reach as many pets as they can - and as we reported to you on Wednesday, we’ve rescued thousands. But there are thousands more.

At this 11th hour, when so many lives are at stake, we are asking you to help. I urge you to contact these government officials today and ask them to help rescue animals before it is too late. Please click here to call or send an email to President Bush and other federal and state officials who have the power to order National Guardsmen and other responders to assist with food drops, help supply our own operations, and do whatever else it takes to save animals.

One of our rescuers said it best: “We should not have to rely on the compassionate instincts of individual Guardsmen to rescue these animals. We need the full commitment of the government.”

Members of Congress have also been calling on President Bush and the federal agencies to actively assist with direct animal rescue. With most of the human victims of the catastrophe removed from the city, it’s not too late to save animals’ lives. It’s time for the government to recognize the incredible bond between people and their pets, and step in to help.

To find hotels that accomodate pets. I've never had a problem finding a place. Even in remote areas. I scour the internet for B&Bs as well. Many of them (especially cabin-style places) allow pets in an emergency situation. I lived in Florida growing up and my family always had pets that we brought with us when we evacuated. My mom had 6 kids--she wouldn't have left the pets any more than she would have left one of us!

96. Amazing as it may seem, many pets that are still being rescued out of

homes, are still very much alive -- after 3 weeks -- and healing under care.

Bless the determined and compassionate heroes that are rescuing these babies -- on very little sleep, with almost no warm meals, and under conditions that are pretty rough. O8)

There were new requests from Pasado today and yesterday (forgot to mention that these guys are from Seattle, and are doing incredible work very far away from home!). They are in need of some kind words and a hot meal. If you're interested, both can be provided at their website.

My friends keep telling me that my pet volunteer work is making me depressed! It is VERY depressing, but it is also VERY rewarding when I feel I've been able to make a difference in a pet's life. I'll step up my volunteer efforts when I'm no longer a SAHM (stay at home mom).

I wish I could adopt some. We already have 5 cats (all plucked from the streets and alleys of my neighborhood); when we get a condo, maybe I'll adopt a NOLA dog. But for now, I'll just have to donate money.

My husband and I were talking about this. We have 4 cats, a dog, a bird, a guinea pig... and we live in a small apartment. I REALLY want to foster some of these babes, but I just don't think we can do it. We've been donating, too.
We've talked about going down there, but the timing just isn't going to work at the moment. I feel helpless from up here, though. :(

Blanco needs to give orders for a full-scale rescue to occur -- specifically, she needs to get the National Guard to help.

Some cops, etc. have been barring rescuers' entry into certain areas.

The main shelter at Gonzales (Lamar-Dixon) barred additional animals' entry, saying that it was too crowded. But today, when Boone Pickens tried to get animals onto his flight out of the state, the State & HSUS wouldn't let him take any from Gonzales.

Some of the dogs that are deemed as non-critical are given food and water and a note is made to pick them up tomorrow or whenever. This is especially true for the dogs who are indoors. The reason they cannot take them all is because there is not room at Lamar. This is the most frustrating part, according to Cynthia. There are many places all over the country wanting to take huge amounts of dogs and space could be freed up at Lamar to go out and get animals still out in the city. Unfortunately, all the regulations now put in place on taking dogs out of the state prevent this.

These ridiculous policies, IMO, will make them directly responsible for the deaths of countless pets.

September 18, 2005 – Noah’s Wish, a not-for-profit organization that works exclusively to rescue and shelter animals in disasters, is caring for 642 rescued animals at a temporary shelter in Slidell, Louisiana. Cats, dogs, rabbits, ducks, chickens, geese, a rat, a snake, a turtle, hamsters, a scorpion, a tarantula and one emu are among the animals that have been rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by Noah’s Wish and Slidell Animal Control. At the request of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Noah’s Wish has taken 49 owned cats from the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzalez, Louisiana. The cats will be cared for at the temporary shelter in Slidell until they can be reunited with their owners.
