5. That's actually one of the first precepts of foreign diplomacy

A country really only has as much of an interest in foreign diplomacy as it has justifiable interests that are touched upon by foreign powers.

As much as preserving our national interests is a basis for diplomacy, it is also perversely a basis for wars of aggression.

The fine hair to split is that it is our "values" (the real ones, not the thing about diddling butts) that drive which way we interpret that.

If our values as a nation are to care about the bigger picture of the world and about the little people that make it what it is, then it is only natural to pursue every conceivable avenue of diplomacy and cooperation first.

If our values as a nation are arrogance, hubris, and exclusive selfish self interest at the expense of all else, people, political systems, economies, and the environment (welcome to Bushco, Inc.) then we are going to continue to aggressively manipulate and/or invade country after country for oil on one pretext or another, sooner or later.
