Waiting for their "reconstruction contract"....but I guess they'll get by for now on $500,000,000.00 for about 75 days of work...

US: Halliburton Subsidiary, KBR, Clinches More Hurricane Recovery Work

Defense Industry Daily
September 15th, 2005

Kellogg Brown & Root Services Inc. in Arlington, VA received $15 million for Task Order 0020 under its $500 million maximum "emergency response" contract with the US government.

(cut)

Task Order 0020 is a cost reimbursement, indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity construction capabilities contract for post-Katrina recovery efforts in support of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for "unwatering activities" in Plaquemines, East and West basins, New Orleans, LA.

The work to be performed provides for immediate disaster recovery response to repair pumps (many of which were poorly designed for the conditions they faced) and restore utilities to efficiently and rapidly remove water from these areas. Work will be performed in New Orleans, LA, and is expected to be complete by November 2005.

1. CA, FL, MN Win Debris Removal Contracts
So much for the local economy.

"George Bush stood before the nation tonight and in an attempt to repair his tarnished image, unveiled the most massive reconstruction program since - maybe the reconstruction. At the same time, the US Army Corps of Engineers in conjunction with FEMA announced 4 contracts worth $500 million each, with the option of an additional $500 million. While Bush touted local jobs and local small business incentives, the debris removal contracts have been awarded to 2 corporations in Florida, 1 in Minnesota and 1 in California. Not a very promising start."

4. Why doesn't anyone make a bigger deal about this?
I haven't heard any dems make a fuss about Halliburton raking in billions in Iraq and on the Gulf Coast.

7. Dem fat cats in Congress get lobbied too...
There's a LOT of cheap talk from well-embedded Dem Congress folk but they meet with a lot of the same lobbyists, go on many of the same vacations with lobbyists and feed from the same trough as many in the GOP.

I could list on two hands the number of Dems REALLY worth keeping (many of them discussed frequently here).

The rest give good speech, but let this crap happen again and again and again without REALLY taking a stand.

11. It's the reverse really
The ones who run around and rant and rave don't get anything done. The ones who point out the problems rationally are also the ones with the credibility to make the changes, and they do but people like you usually never pay attention to it.

10. Pay closer attention
I would venture a guess John Kerry said "halliburton" in every speech he gave last year, that and Saudi oil.

Here's Pelosi's call for an anti-fraud commission:

http://www.lightupthedarkness.org/blog/default.asp?view=plink&id=1361

I could list a number of Dems who have called for investigations and/or pitched a fit about the corporate cronyism and for changes in the reconstruction in Iraq. If it isn't precluded with "bush sucks", some people can't hear it.

6. Here's another contrct for Halliburton:
Halliburton Gets Contract To Pry Gold Fillings From New Orleans Corpses' Teeth

September 14, 2005 | Issue 41•37

HOUSTON—On Tuesday, Halliburton received a $110 million no-bid government contract to pry the gold fillings from the mouths of deceased disaster victims in the New Orleans-Gulf Coast area. "We are proud to serve the government in this time of crisis by recovering valuable resources from the wreckage of this deadly storm," said David J. Lesar, Halliburton's president. "The gold we recover from the human rubble of Katrina can be used to make fighter-jet electronics, supercomputer chips, inflation-proof A-grade investments, and luxury yachting watches."

9. Instead of giving the contracts to one or two big companies
wouldn't it be better to give these jobs to a greater number of smaller comapanies.

Wouldn't that stimulate the economy more.

Sure, they may not have all the resources or infrastructure that Haliburton has at the moment but I am sure they would do just fine.

Plus, didn't ole' GW say something about giving jobs to repair the area to the locals.

Hmmmmmmmm...
