Wiretap mosques, Romney suggests
Pushes gathering of intelligence

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/09/15/wiretap_mosques_romney_suggests/WASHINGTON -- Governor Mitt Romney raised the prospect of wiretapping mosques and conducting surveillance of foreign students in Massachusetts, as he issued a broad call yesterday for the federal government to devote far more money and attention to domestic intelligence gathering.
In remarks that caused alarm among civil libertarians and advocates for immigrants rights, Romney said in a speech to the Heritage Foundation that the United States needs to radically rethink how it guards itself against terrorism.
....
''How about people who are in settings -- mosques, for instance -- that may be teaching doctrines of hate and terror," Romney continued. ''Are we monitoring that? Are we wiretapping? Are we following what's going on?"
...
''It is virtually impossible to have a homeland security system based upon the principles only of protecting key assets and response," he told an audience of about 100. ''The key to a multilayered strategy begins with effective prevention, and, for me, prevention begins with intelligence and counterterror activity."
Starting a potential Presidential run by advocating a police state?
Although from what I've seen, some here may very well advocate this surveillance of Muslims, I wonder just how many FBI agents will we need to monitor each mosque, considering a need to translate prayers 5 times a day. (There's gotta be a code here, they keep repeating this surah 'Al Fathita' :P ) Not to mention Jumma kutbahs, any school activity or Halqwas, community dinners,Ramadan Iftars, and just idle chit chat among the Sisters and Brothers. We muslims don't just get together 3 times a week like you civilized and pious Christian folk, try a minimum of 45 times a week just for prayers! I guess backgrounds for visitors who attend open houses also shouldn't be out of the question.
And if I remember correctly, there was a shortage of Arab translators for the cia and military intelligence not long ago. Is there now a sudden glut? And lets remember we will need translators for Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Malay, Bengali, and a host of other dialects, because not every muslim is from an arab country. We'll probably have to outsource overseas for translators. Maybe Pakistan.
On the other hand, this is a great idea.
The mere attempt alone may bankrupt this criminal government faster than another 3 Iraq wars. :) Insha Allah.
As always, Peace.
Yes, peace, even to the haters.
