54. This is a live issue within the Red Cross
Sign this petition to ask the Red Cross to allow pets to be taken to shelters. (It can be done without harming other people with allergies, etc..)

The individual volunteers are working on this from within.

BTW- I got injured inside a house (while the fire fighters were doing "overhaul") when a fire captain and I went looking for a displaced occupants missing cat. Generally, most of us Red Cross volunteers work with the Fire Fighters (who are America's greatest) to find pets.

About six months ago a Fire Fighter and I rescued two cats that had burrowed up into the inner spring during a fire.

26. To put some minds (and hearts) at ease
Several of the dogs used in this slide show have been rescued. There are a couple of pictures right off HSUS's web site (the pit bull swimming towards the camera for instance was swimming toward a rescue boat and he is fine now).

Just thought some might feel better knowing at least some of these creatures made it out ok.

Please support the efforts of the groups who made that a reality.

28. Tribute to a Dog
Gentlemen of the jury, the best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son and daughter that he has reared with loving care may become ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him when he may need it most. Man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees and do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our head.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his DOG. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as content in his love as the sun in its journey throught the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast into the cold, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard him against danger, and to fight against his enemies. When the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws and his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

-Senator George Vest, 1870.

I have to believe many cats are "homeless" down there too! And they hate water more than dogs do as wellI look at my two cat critters and wonder how many of those friends are also suffering down there too!

For that matter, I wonder how many animals in total have been wiped out there, not just pets... Any estimates?

38. The problem is that they might do more harm than good...
Unless those taking photos know of a place they can take these animals to be cared for promptly, all they might do is just displace the animal from someplace that might at least close to that animal's home, causing the animal more stress, and perhaps reducing that the animal might be found for their owner (if the owner has contacted those in the area to look for an animal of theirs).

I would hope that there are more and more well staffed and resourced animal shelters that can do more than just the average time in the shelter before they put them down to give owners more time to claim them given their circumstances. If I was in the area and knew a place like that to take such an animal, I'd be taking them there if I were on site taking those pics, though one needs to take precautions not to catch disease in these instances too. Would also be important to document where you found them too, to help identify their owners as well.

53. I didn't watch the video, I can't handle it
I'm crying just thinking about it! I have been phoning and writing for a week now and I hope we can all help make a difference for the pets. I also sent $200.00 to the ASPCA and $100.00 to the Humane Society. I know they will use it wisely.
The LAT had an article, with pictures, yesterday showing animals being flown to various cities in Ca. The flight attendants let a lot of them out to walk around and even go into the cockpit! Is that cool or what! The co-pilot is adopting one of the dogs.
Stories like that are what keep me going.
