Steve Earle: standing up, speaking out

Saw Steve Earle & The Dukes last night -- they opened with "Amerika v. 6.0", which is of course my song.

He spoke for a long time about how we need to wake up, do our homework, and connect the dots from the Calif. recall to the Texas redistricting to the 2000 election. He also mentioned (as his heroes) Patrick Leahy, for speaking out against John Ashcroft, and George Ryan, for following his conscience.

Amazing concert, amazing guy. We need more like him on our side, speaking out.

10. Don't need Cheap Channel For Steve Earle

I've got all of his albums. Well, not all but most of them.

Steve's one activist/artist that put's his ass on the line and pays more than lip-service to the causes that the he promotes......Concerts for a Landmine Free World and his active participation against the death penalty. A true patriot who has overcome serious personal nightmares.

13. Steve Earle is so Right On

I saw him in the Spring before Iraq started.
He was closing the show with Elvis Costello's/ Nick Lowe's,
Peace, Love, and Understanding He and the Dukes were ROCKING OUT on it.

Everyone should make a point of seeing him or picking up a couple of his cd's. I agree that 'I Feel Alright' may be his best. I espeically liked 'Transcendental Blues' too. I like the title track and the song 'Another Town' off of it. He rocks out more on that song in concert too.

You can make some great playlists with Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Warren Zevon, and Willie Nelson songs.

16. Are you ready to be jealous?

Not only did I see Steve at the world famous Fillmore back in February, but back in November '02 he played an impromptu solo gig with his acoustic right there at Amoeba Records on Haight Street near Ashbury. And he friggin played "Valentines Day" from IFA - just him and the acoustic ... brought me to tears. Had my ex on the cell phone listening to it, she used to love me to sing it to her. Well, that night was the first time I heard anything off Jerusalem, I liked what I heard, bought it, and now I have me a signed copy. I like Jerusalem, but it's his least excellent since 'the other kind' (pre-rehab), all told. Too short, for one thing. Still, okay for SE is flipping brilliant compared to 99% of other people. I concur with the assessment of I Feel Alright. Definitely one of the greatest albums of all time, period. Followed closely by El Corazon, and Train A' Comin.

Steve is THE MAN. Straight up. Support him and his work - you'll both be the better for it.

His work just gets better all the time. Interesting to hear other artists cover his songs now, too.
