Am Desperately Seeking Missing NOLA Friend, Please Help --
DU-ers --- does anybody know if there is a credible source regarding the number of people who are still missing in NOLA? And what is going on with the body count?

I've heard from various sources there were "hundreds" of bodies in the Convention Center (he was caught on video there in the background on the Thurs after the hurricane.) And yet no official news on that either. What is going on with the body count. When are they going to ID these people.

This guy made it through the storm for sure, he called family afterward, whether he made it through the subsequent nightmare, it's awful not knowing!!

The Red Cross list is pretty useless. Where are all the stats on the status of missing evacuees and the ID'ing of the dead??

Does anybody else have that creepy feeling that the reason they held off so long on the body clean up is to make it impossible to determine the cause of death? I had heard nightmare stories of people dehydrating at the Convention Center.

1. Direct TV, Channel 100, is devoting the channel 24/7 to
air missing people and resources available. Do you have it? I will try to watch for a credible site and get back to you.

4. Try www.satern.org
Salvation Army's amateur radio group has a list of 55,000 missing reported; that includes some duplicates (multiple people searching for same folks). They are getting ready to merge their list with missing lists from other groups, so there's hope. They are also comparing against shelters.

8. Searching by phone number
I heard on the radio this week about either a website or phone number that somebody created that allows you to search for people by using their phone number. People could also list themselves there, leaving a message for anyone who searches for their number.

That's all I remember, though, nothing more specific than that.

Best of luck to you in your search.

9. well i heard there were around 30 bodies in the convention center
be aware that communications, both cell and landline, remain spotty so yr friend may be ok but unable to communicate just yet

many ppl remain w.out electric or internet service which prevents them from posting on the internet or adding their name to the "i'm ok" lists

you can try nola.com missing person data base:

http://people.nola.com/search.aspx?pid=494E73433963646C516A3965326D585069416A2F64673D3D&catid=hk10

if yr friend was evac'd from the convention center he might even be in texas or another state, if he has lost his cell, he might not know the numbers & be ok but unable to figure out how to contact you

you may need to keep searching the different data bases

i finally had to drive out to one friend's rural home to locate her but this won't work for finding someone who got out of their home & is now lost elsewhere

11. Search Katrina PeopleFinder Project. They have tried to put together
all notices on boards & databases into one. I tried to help out but found it hard to cross-reference so I gave up. But perhaps your friend is already on here - or you could find contact numbers of family & such who would also be looking.

13. I had a friend at the convention center for four days and nights.
I have spoken to him twice since he got out. There were dead bodies at the convention center, but not hundreds. He said he saw maybe ten or so dead bodies. The people from the convention center were taken to evacuation centers all over. My friend ended up in Conway, Arkansas. Once there he was given the ability to call his family. The first place to start would be at the evacutaion centers, but if your friend has not called family yet it is unlikely that he made it to an evacutation center.

I found my friend by looking on Craigslist and then contacting his extended family in Texas.

15. K8-EEE, try craigslist
at http://neworleans.craigslist.org/laf/

There are many posts there. Be sure you list your friend's name on as many "missing" lists as you can find. So many people are just checking "found" lists, and don't realize that by putting people in the missing list, they might tickle the memory of someone who has seen or knows of the whereabouts of this person. This is how I located my mentally ill son, who was missing for ten days in New Orleans.

Also, as another poster suggested, try the Katrina People Finder. This is a huge database that has been put together to coordinate and combine all the other databases of lost and found people.
