Being cynical about whether he means what he stated is warranted given that he's nothing but an illegal occupant of the White House who is also a lying mass murderer who digs people being tortured.

That said, what we must do is hold him to his own self-imposed metric -- "We The People" need to force him and his clan to account to the meaning of those words, and we need to do it every day that he remains in the White House.

I don't know whether or not he meant it.

However, it was truly amazing that he even said it.

That line, "...That poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America..." was Junior admitting that there is a connection between poverty and discrimination.

TRULY. UNIMAGINABLE. THAT. HE. SAID. THOSE. WORDS.

This goes against basic, fundamental conservative dogma---that everyone has an equal chance at succeeding in America--you just have to TRY. To acknowledge that some are at a disadvantage and to HELP with those disadvantages is SOCIALISM, according to most conservatives. Poor people are poor because they chose to be. They're lazy. They lack motivation. Those are basic tenants of conservatism that we hear 24/7 from Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.

I really don't know if he realized what he was saying, or if he meant those words.

However, the fact that those words were uttered from his mouth--is truly historical.

My husband and I heard this on the radio. Immediately after the sentence, we turned to each other--completely wide eyed. My husband said, "Holy shit...Bush has turned into a 'new Dealer'.

Again, I don't know WHAT this means--if it was BS or maybe even a typographical error in the speech---but it's remarkable that these words would be spoken, by one of the most conservative, elitist SOBs to ever rule the planet.

I'd like to hear more about why people think he said this. He didn't have to say it. Yes, he could always be bs-ing. But come on--why would he utter a remark that contradicts everything that he and his band of thugs have said for decades?? Junior won't even meet with the NAACP! His budget cut programs for the poor! He's against affirmative action and programs that help the inner city.

This is equivalent to Michael Moore rallying against Unions!

NO, he did not. Before he even said those words he rescinded the Davis/Bacon Act, denied the call to rescind the new bankruptcy bill at least for the people living in the area, he refuses to even think about rolling back the tax for the rich or the estate tax. Just like the ghost like stage props making him look like a bobble head rising from the Bayou with it's eerie unreal vision. His "lotto" for government land? There isn't any government land there to "lotto" away. No, there was very little honesty in his words. Always look to his actions, this administration and this Congress has not done one thing that would or could be described as honest. It boggles the mind that we still keep hope of any kind.

I know everyone on DU dislikes the "freepers" but I feel sorry for them, most of them are the ones who cannot accept the actions of this President and continue to believe in his words all the while he is stripping their foundations away from them. He's not done one thing in support of the masses out here, no matter what their political stripe, it's all been for the top 2 percent. Think how confused they must feel when they find themselves and their children sitting in mud and they don't know how they got there.

Maybe this trajedy has effected him in some way. He has been spending alot of time with the mayor of NO. Only time will tell if something has changed.

His base is in open revolt over the speech so something interesting is going on.

Maybe the tragedy has made him realize his presidency is clouded with disaster... so in that sense he could identify with the victims, but I wouldn't credit him with having suddenly developed a conscience.

and I just had the thought, what if the tourist venues or yuppies try to take a lot of that land for themselves, and the original peoples can't come back to their previous homes. They were saying everyone has to leave, but now portions of New Orleans or opening up again.
