Hurricane cleanup costs worry U.S. conservatives

WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Conservative Republicans on Capitol Hill are worried about the growing costs of rebuilding the storm-ravaged U.S. Gulf Coast, and want to pay for it by cutting domestic spending on programs like a new prescription drug benefit for the elderly.

"It's not an exaggeration to say that we're on the verge of a meltdown," said John Hart, a spokesman for Sen. Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican who has threatened to hold up emergency spending bills to pay for the reconstruction unless offsetting budget cuts are found.

Fiscal conservatives in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate are concerned the costs of rebuilding roads, utilities, businesses and homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina will swell an already large U.S. budget deficit.

...

"You bet it's going to cost money, but I'm confident we can handle it and I'm confident we can handle our other priorities," Bush told reporters when asked about Republican complaints over the spending.

1. Here's a novel idea: Start bringing troops home and stop
the idiotic war in Iraq.

2. What about their precious tax cuts?!
Do they think they're entitled to their tax cuts by divine right or something? Oh, right, they do...

Or we could eke out a spare $87 billion by ending the occupation of Iraq. I guess they wouldn't like that either... :grr:

6. You should've thought about repair costs when you cut $ for levees
and you cut the budgets for the ACOE and FEMA, sent 50% of the Nat'l guards (and their equipment)to Iraq and allowed widespread destruction of wetlands south of NOLA.

Boo Fucking Hoo!

Get over it. You fucked up. Now STFU and you rich Republicans rescind your tax breaks and pay to rebuild the Gulf Cost.

7. If they think the clean up ...
Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 03:41 PM by Drifter
is going to be expensive ... wait until they get the bill for the NEW shiney New Orleans.

Unfortunately, there is no real source of money to pay for what AWOL promises. So he will have to make more cuts, like the levee funding cuts. Where does this stop ?

The security of our nation has taken a nose dive since the chimp was annointed. It is now going to get even worse to recover from the results of our weakened security.

Cheers

8. But we still must repeal the inheritance tax right?
They only want to cut spending that actually helps people. Throw away BILLIONS in frauds that is OK as long as they get their share. Plan to spend a few dollars helping people and watch them suddenly get conservative.

it's their fault the levees weren't properly funded in the first place

16. Well, Bush is confident!
Of course, he's not telling anyone where these magic billions will come from, but by golly he's CONFIDENT they can handle it!

He was confident about Iraq too! And disaster response!

I feel all warm and fuzzy.
