could Californians that care, set up paper and boxes outside of each polling place to ask people to vote to check if the machines are counting correctly?
SOMETHING has to be done!
sitting in our homes saying "oh, my" won't change a damn thing.

Here's an idea I saw in an article somewhere (it's too late for the recall, but should be done for Election 2004):
Encourage all voters in precincts that refuse to implement a paper backup system to submit absentee ballots. It's the only way to make sure there is a permanent record of your vote.
