...I keep seeing the compelling & expensive commercials, so I have to ask myself how much of their budget really goes to the children.

I will continue to donate to established Katrina relief orgs; but does anyone know more about The Christian Children's Fund, or the accuracy of Charity Navigator?

1. According to my father (who's run various national charities),

most responsible charities use less than 20% of donations for administrative and advertising expenses.

...so this charity seems to make it in under the wire.


Personally, I'd be leery of the message that's pushed with that aid they're providing, but if you're not, it seems to be a legitimate way to help.

15. Not the United Methodist Church, it's 100% w/0 to admin costs.

It's charity mght be UMCOR, or something like that. They're great.

4. I requested a breakdown of Christian Children’s Funds

expenses years ago, you know, what percentage of donated money goes where..I cant remember now what the exact number was but a large part went towards evangelism. It was enough for me not to donate.

7. Thats my problem with alot of religious organizations that claim they help

people in need, I don't like having religion forced down my throat, and therefore I don't think that it should be forced down no one elses throat. Its more important to help the person in need rather to convert them.

Has the Iraq war replaced the Peace Corps as the model for American benevolance? How myopic is our current leadership that it fails to sieze upon the world's need for butter & not guns?

(figuratively) For every pound of butter given away -- we can eliminate a gun pointed against us. The only reason I can come up with that this admin ignores this dynamic is that it's far more concerned with exerting control than anticipating & managing threats.

...National Charities Information Bureau (NCIB). They're at http://www.give.org/.

CCF and other child sponsorship organizations all operate in pretty much the same way. They set up projects in various underdeveloped, or developing, areas and enroll needy children in their programs. Once a child is enrolled, he or she is available for sponsorship. When sponsored, the child remains in the program, whether the sponsor continues or not.

Your donation goes to the project and is pooled with the donations of other sponsors, to provide food, shelter, medicine, and an education for all of the children in that project. Your sponsored child will write to you periodically, whether or not you write to him or her. If he or she is too young to write, typically, a field project worker will write for the child.

In addition to monthly sponsorship reminders, you'll receive special appeals for Easter, Christmas, your child's birthday, and so on. Even if you don't respond to these appeals, the project workers will give your child--and, sometimes the whole family--gifts. You may be thanked for these gifts in letters from your child.

If you want more information about sending presents, visiting sponsored children, etc., PM me. But suffice it to say that sponsorship organizations really do help kids and their families. :)

They "get to know" someone and invite them to church and things like that. Now I'm okay if the person does it on their own freewill, but these groups are supposed to be a positive enviornment to help people. *sigh* All they care about are the numbers. As a Christian myself it's really sad. :(

If a lot of it goes towards that then they're doing false advertising. It's supposed to be a charity. People send money for that and not evangelism. Ugh.
