'Home' in a crisis (introduction)

The same thing that compelled many of the victims of Hurricane Katrina to stay put is what will ensure the city of New Orleans rises again – the singular lure of Home.

Many stuck to the place they know best because it seemed the like safest option, not because they were ill-informed or panicked. They had the comfort of familiar surroundings, if not family and friends. And - despite repeated warnings from safety officials - they weren’t persuaded there was a better option for them in the community.

“Home is a hell of a lot more comfortable than the Superdome,” said Russell Dynes, founding director of the Disaster Research Center at the University of Delaware.

1. Fancy theories for simple truth

It's called the denning instinct, as anyone who deals with animals knows.

It's why horses run back into a burning barn.

Humans, despite our most vociferous denials and sense of entitlements, are animals. Sometimes that instinct saves us, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes we burn to death in the barn. But it's a strong instinct because over the course of time, the choice to hole up in familiar territory is a better survival strategy than trying to navigate new territory in a crisis.

You no doubt noticed I linked to the CBCunlocked website. The CBC management locked out their workers (reporters, etc) in a "labour dispute". Sigh. That means as a good socialist, I can't go to my favourite source for news, CBC.ca. The unlocked website is produced by the locked out workers. It just goes to show, good writers always will find a way to write.
