This initiative, which is supported by federal agencies and public and private organizations, is the only national effort that focuses on alcohol-use prevention among children ages 9 to 15.
Since 2000, she has served as honorary chair of Florida's annual Statewide Prevention Conference. In each of the past five years, more than 1500 prevention specialists and high school students have come together to celebrate declining drug use rates, motivate sustained momentum, and to learn what works best in preventing youth use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
Additionally, she serves on the board of Columbia University's Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), the nation's foremost resource institution on the prevention of substance abuse, and is a spokesperson and member of Informed Families of Florida.
Her board memberships extend well beyond Florida’s borders and encompass national boards such as the Phoenix House and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). As the National Madrina for SAMHSA, she helps empower Latinas to turn their backs on drugs and alcohol and raises awareness of the vast contributions to Florida’s heritage made by Hispanic Americans through this initiative.
