Surely There Is a Dem in the Great State of CA to Beat Ahhnuld--WHO?
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 09:49 AM by UTUSN
PLEASE, a reasonably smart somebody with even the HINT of a PERSONALITY and the common touch, a non-professional-politician who has not had the MARROW of humanity SUCKED OUT from deadening political hackwork. Is that asking too much? Who? Who?

1. Larry David???? Rob Reiner????
Hey, the actor as governor thing has been done (badly) twice, maybe the third time will be the charm....

2. The only other 2 action stars I can think of to run are
Sly Stallone and Bruce Willis. Maybe Tom Cruise, too.

Are you suggesting a non-action star run?

5. Actually, I Wasn't Limiting to Movie Stars or Celebrities
A GENUINE HUMAN would do nicely. Just saying that bureaucrats, even well-intentioned ones, have their humanity WASHED OUT of them. Look at the senators in the ROBERTS hearings, our future prez candidates.

10. Er, I was being sarcastic.
Right now, I'm recalling an MSM news item from a few weeks ago that stated that studies show that daydreaming leads to Alzheimer's Disease. I think that was their way of saying, stop thinking and hoping.

4. Sean Penn or Tim Ribbins!!!!

I love Tim Robbins the best.

It's sad that a regular politician can't seem to get elected.

Oh ---maybe Antonia V., the handsome Mayor, and compassionate leader of Los Angeles!

7. What about Feinstein or Boxer?
If either one has presidential ambitions, it would be good for them to run as a governor. Also, I don't think Ahhnuld would stack up (so to speak) next to a women.

She would be a great choice. Is she presentable and well-spoken from a California point of view?

9. can't help but think that at this point, even Gray could beat him.
Ironic, eh?

Not suggesting such a run (what a disaster) - but just pointing out how bad things look for Arnie.

There is a state senator in San Diego who really took a lead with the energy crisis hearings. Can't recall his name - but he is smart, good looking and has a great deal of integrity.

is who I was thinking about - saw him in some hearings a few years back - he was quite impressive.

11. Angelides.
Incidentally, don't forget that Arnold got a lot of votes in CA because he was an immigrant.

It's not going to hurt for the Demcratic nominee to be an immigrant or the first generation following immigrant parents.

Angelides is the child of greek immigrants, but I think his story will feel more authentic to all immigrants to California than Arnolds, no matter where the immigrants come from.

14. There are many, many actors...
...who have the qualifications. (Ed Begley Jr. comes to mind.) I don't know if another actor is the way to go. Those in the entertainment industry can run a candidate of their choosing and use their money and voice to back them. If they put all their resources into this, they could do it. But they would need to break away from their own careers long enough to be affective. That's the question.

Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 11:05 AM by Johnyawl
How about Gavin Newsom, the mayor of San Fransico, or Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, the lady that beat "B1" Bob Dornan in Orange County?

If I could have my pick, I'd run Feinstien against him, and once she won, have her appoint Sanchez to fill her Senate seat.

23. not everybody
unless Dunn suddenly became an actor while I wasn't paying attention.

I rather like your Feinstien scenario, though. However would have to make sure that Diane (new gov) would have the authority to appoint rather than Arnie (sitting gov)

22. Ahhnold will probably manage to "win" again, because
he has the most money.. I hate to say it, but that's the way politics runs these days.. I hope I am wrong, but the names mentioned so far are not household names, and people will vote for someone because they recognize the name...even if they know nothing about the person...

By the time the election happens, Ahhhnold's goofs will be spun as endearing little "fluffs" that only happened because he was trying so hard to be a good governor, after such a baaaaad governor (Davis)...

Democrats in DC "ignore" California at their peril.. We ARE a blue state, but we have had many (BAD) republican governors, and our school system shows it..

We also use touch screen voting machines..

a word to the (not so) wise:(

Michael Douglas is a big time Democrat. I think I read someplace that Pitt was a Democrat also.

27. My recommendation would be a professional politican - Jackie Speier
But the timing is wrong right now. She is all but a shoe-in with her bid for lieutenant governor, and I expect her to be a contender for governor in the future. In my opinion, Jackie Speier is the most competent and qualified person out there, for the job.

28. Fabian Nunez
There's the Democrat that can beat Arnold. Well spoken, great background story, articulate defender of unions and the little people, Latino that would appeal to California's large Latino community, a good record as Assembly Speaker. If you want to know why Arnold has tanked in the polls, it's because of Nunez. Unfortunately, Nunez is term-limited to six years in the State House. He should run, but I doubt he will run.
