Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 11:30 AM by maine_raptor
I was going "Hmmmmmmmmm" by the time it was over.

Could it be that Robert's will be the country's first "Gay Supreme Court Chief". :wow:

He made a good arguement for it.

15. Ok, but--- AS A GAY MAN, I have to say
that photo looks awful familiar. Not the persons present, but the arrangement of the parties and the food subject. :silly:

Seriously, that picture looks like something that would be taken at a gay man's birthday party, or holiday, or some such. I do say this with some authority in the matter :)

So proud of the food, he posed with it and friends. Or were they "friends"?

29. If Robert's is gay
and is nominated, when/if he is discovered, then what? Do they fire him? Does Pat Robertson kill himself? What?

I don't have a problem with a CJ being gay. In fact, I think it would be an improvement over the previous. I just have a problem with it if he is lying about it.

57. not really
I think it speaks more to their political cynicism than anything else. In the circles of power, I'm confident none of these "morality" issues are a matter of much real concern. Moral outrage and controversy has always been just a shiny bauble they use to keep the public hypnotized and that fundie money rolling in.

32. We could be looking at Impeachment time
If he came out, AFTER he was sworn in, then the only way he could be removed is thru impeachment in the House and trial in the Senate.

It would be the spectacle of the GOP eating their young.

If that happens, I'll be watching () and laughing (), cause they would need 2/3'rds in the Senate and NO WAY they gettin' that.

miserable than themselves....and they enjoy inflicting pain....which may explain why he doens't like blacks or women.

And another thing!!! He didn't marry until he was 41 years old...so was his wife (maybe she's a lesbian?).....and those 2 kids of theirs....THEY WERE PURCHASED FROM SOUTH AMERICA....!!!! THEY'RE ADOPTED!!! THIS IS ALL STARTING TO MAKE SENSE!

170. Some kind of weird back door adoption.
They *are* from Ireland but Ireland has very strict adoption laws so apparently it's common for people to adopt via third countries. I think it sounds kind of odd, myself, but apparently it's as aboveboard as such things get. :eyes:

Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 11:33 PM by BareNakedLiberal
He does it in ways that are funny, but he never dismisses the fact that he is gay. He went to the press dinner with Wolfe Blitzer, not Ann Coulter (who may or may not be a man :rolf:)

But seriously, I believe him when he says he is gay. Although I can't stand him, sometimes he gets left on after TDS and Adam Corrola announced that his lover was Jimmy Kimmel, with no jokes or apologies added.

Who knows who is gay and then again, who really cares?

who had worked as teenagers at his restaurant in Tacoma back in the 70's. He settled out of court for about $5 million (most of which came from insurance policies- according to the Seattle Times) just before trial when it became evident a lot of people were lining up to testify against him."

20. There was a career-ending scandal, and he died last year
"His public career came to an end when two of his male assistant chefs brought charges of sexual harassment against him. Shortly thereafter, in 1998, several men alleged that he had sexually assaulted them in the 1970s, when they worked for him. Smith denied the accusations. He was taken off the air shortly afterward. Though he was never charged with a crime, the stigma associated with the accusations kept him from returning to the airwaves."

Did not marry until he was 45
Kids were by adoption
wrote briefs supporting gay causes

He, Rove, Scotty, Ken Mehlmen, a certain fox broadcaster, and so many
more seem to be in a strange self loathing gays for bush group.

As a straight guy I don't get it. Jews for Hitler?

53. The Neocons have no problem with gays...
they are more leery of women than homosexuals historically. Today in Washington circles gay men are the preferred fodder for power mongers. Of course they all marry females and present themselves as traditionalists.

This is not the thread for discussion but throughout history many leaders were not as they appeared.

It's so frustrating sometimes - when people who should know better just don't get it. It's no surprise when the RW slanders and libels, but when those who are supposed to be allies do it - you just have to shake your head and wonder, Do I belong anywhere?

The greatest difficulty I have here is the majority of people believe it's okay to defer GLBT equality in order to win elections. :banghead:

If I never hear another Democrat lecture me about the need to be "pragmatic", it'll be too soon. God, I hate that. And then to see Democrats titter and giggle over John Roberts like this?! Fuck me.

I understand it's a reaction to the hypocrisy of the reich wing but for crying out loud - at some point we'll have to grow up and develop legitimate arguments about why these Federalist moles are bad for the SC.

And now, I'll surrender the soapbox to others... ;) :hi:

26. Maher believes there are somethings about Roberts' background
that might make some speculate to his being gay. For someone who is very conservative, he has supported gay rights in the past. He married in his 40s and has adopted children. Then Maher flashed this photo to emphasize why he thinks Roberts might be gay.

44. There have been a lot of jokes made about this
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 12:12 PM by Lucille
Pictures of him posing in the yearbook wearing plaid pants.

His role as Peppermint Patti in the school play.

Oh, yeah. His high school love of wrestling.

Then there's his more recent history as a long-time bachelor, then marriage w/adopted kids, not to mention his pro-bono work for a gay organization.

Of course, it doesn't help that the photos make him look like Tony Randall w/a sinus infection in "The Odd Couple."

I believe it all started as snarkiness on the internet. Then some lunatics over at NRO took the jokes as the left's attempt to smear the good name of Judge Roberts. One even wrote that, after having read the NYT article on him following the nomination, she thought the reporter (Bumiller, one of the biggest Bush-ass kisser, ever) was trying to put in subtle messages to communicate Robert's "gayness." AS if the mention of Peppermint Patti was intended as a subliminal smear. Facts, you see, made the commentator think "gay," and the thoughts in her head were put there by the liberal media.

In my opinion, there's a reason the right wing wants laws to suppress homosexuality. It's because they need those laws in order to suppress their OWN homosexuality.

I have to say, though, that photo just about screams "Fire Island, 1977."

Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 12:17 PM by maine_raptor
I think that some of it is POWER. The shear desire for political power.

The Religious Right is a big factor in this. If it were not for the resources (votes, effort, money and media) of that group, the Right would not be as powerful as it is today. There is a strong religious component to this.

61. Yes, but
Back then it was anti-communism, not some sort of "morality" as it is today. The Right had it's religious supporters back then but it was more aligned against "atheistic communism". And look at the players, not just Hover. Remember Roy Cohen, David Shine (sp?).

When the USSR died, the tone moved away from anti-communism to this morality, although I suspect it was there all along, just submerged by the Cold War mentality.

65. My personal belief about why we now have this "religious righteous"
is because over history, one of the greatest ways to control the masses is through religion. This new crop of radicals, "the religious righteous" learned their lessons from the history of civilization, and use their new found masses very well indeed. I, for not one nano second believe, that these people are religious themselves.

Roberts shaped by small town in Indiana

By Ron Hutcheson
Knight Ridder Newspapers

LONG BEACH, Ind. - Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts doesn't mention acting talent on his resume, but his role as Peppermint Patty in a high school play may say as much about him as his other achievements.

Friends said Roberts was one of the few students at his all-boys Roman Catholic boarding school who had the self-confidence to withstand the razzing from classmates after standing onstage in a dress.

"He carried it off with aplomb. He brought the house down," former classmate Ned Liddell said, chuckling at the memory of Roberts' role in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." "That's self-confidence."

Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 03:00 PM by daisygirl
"Roberts and his wife adopted two infants in 2000 after being unable to conceive: Josephine ("Josie") and Jack Roberts."
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_G._Roberts_Jr.

It could be said that claiming infertility doesn't prove a thing, but if his wife is anywhere close to his age, it's highly probable that they would've had trouble conceiving:
"By age 40, a woman's chance of pregnancy has decreased from 90 percent to 67 percent. By age 45, the chance of becoming pregnant declines to 15 percent." ( http://www.resolve.org/main/national/trying/preserving/preserving.jsp?name=trying&tag=preserving )

If you question A3G's basis for deeming this picture "gay-looking," click on the thumbnail below for a better look, and then check out this (amusingly unhinged) email from a UTR reader:

John Roberts is gay! Look at those smiling buff friends snuggled next to the next Supreme Court Justice on Martha's Vinyard displaying the groumet meal they just made, and THEY will tell you. Now let's hope Roberts is actually confirmed before he's outed like a certain New Jersey Governor! Some legacy for Christian hero W. -- seating the first GAY Supreme Court Justice!* This is SO GREAT!

Oy gay! Are we perhaps getting a little carried away with all of our rumor-mongering concerning Judge Roberts's sexual orientation? After all, the pic was taken on Martha's Vineyard, not Fire Island. And for the record, Scherer is married, as is Lazarus.

be our new Chief Justice, and my OP has not said in the least that the one real reason one shouldn't like Roberts is because he's gay.

This is my personal position as to this thread

but from what I have read, Im not offended. Also, there is a big difference in the decisions people make if they are closeted........I would say even more so when they are in the public eye. I think the guy is pure evil anyhow so while this may matter a great deal in other instances of good closeted people taking public office...I dont think its going to matter much with this one, he's just a creep.

I worry the media tweaking him in this way could be dangerous, in just the way you describe in your post. If he's confirmed, it may cause him to go overboard in his rulings to show he is not gay-friendly. I didn't see Maher's show, but this worries me.

105. Roy Cohns - that IS good - stop calling them gays or
self-hating gays -- call them all Roy Cohns - for everyone who knows that Cohn was a sexual predator who willing to destroy lives to keep his secret - this term says everything. Rove, Mehlman, * -- are all Roy Cohns.

The issue is not sexuality -- it is a sick blend of hypocrisy, abuse of power, and lies, lies, lies.

We need to promote this term - it could help us communicate so much more effectively about why we object to this man (and others like him).

When I see the photo of Roberts with his family, I can't help but think of the Van Trapp family in 'The Sound of Music.' 'Austrians were never Nazis. . .' I have to admit, though that Julie Andrews was a far better choice than the anti-choice fundie beard to whom Roberts is hitched.

98. Sen. Chuck Schumer was also on last night.
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 02:40 PM by OmmmSweetOmmm
He brought up his exchange in the judiciary hearings with Roberts that he had. I heard it live and thought it was hysterical.

Schumer went through this analogy about Roberts as he was sitting there.

Paraphrasing now... It's like asking you, what's your favorite movie, and you say you like movies. I then ask you, but what's your favorite movie and you say I like movies with good acting and directing.

Then Roberts offers that his favorite movies are Dr. Zhivago and North By Northwest. Everyone laughs.

Schumer relates this last night on Real Time, and then throws in the kicker...
I'm surprised it wasn't The Manchurian Candidate.

Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 05:25 PM by snot
no pun intended . . .

But his legal positions seemed to me to show a lack of empathy toward most "underdogs", with the exception that he seemed sympathetic toward theories that would be favorable to gays.

Then, looking at him even before this pic, you think, he's too CUTE to be straight.

On Maher, my 'dar says he's more the Casanova type, within Cynthia Heimel's "hairdresser" category--i.e., not actively or consciously gay at all, but fastidious, and with some fear and hostility toward women that inclines him toward serial conquests rather than monogamy.

Just speculatin'.
