The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded $2 billion to $4 billion in debris removal contracts Friday - three for work in Louisiana, and one for Mississippi debris.
Each was for up to $500 million through September 2006, with an option for another $500 million, said Col. Norbert Doyle, the Corps' principal assistant for contracting. Whether the option is used will depend on cleanup progress and what is needed when the original contract expires.
Ashbritt Inc. of Pompano Beach, Fla., was hired to remove nearly 6 million cubic yards of debris in Mississippi. In Louisiana, where the Corps has an estimated 17 million cubic yards of debris to deal with, the contracts went to Phillips and Jordan Inc. of Zephyrhills, Fla.; Environmental Chemical Corporation of Burlingame, Calif.; and Ceres Environmental Services, Inc., of Brooklyn Park, Minn.
