One year from now, will New Orleans be known as FEMA City ?

I cannot envision building back the old homes that the poorest lived in. Most of the building will be done by carpetbaggers living in the hotels around the French Quarter. A few bars will be open on Bourbon Street. But New Orleans will be a much smaller place than in the past. It will turn into a little enclave for government workers and contractors such as Halliburton and Blackwater. Otherwise, I doubt seriously that more than 25% of original inhabitants will ever return. What do you think?

Or perhaps another Las Vegas like entity? a tourist draw of some type. It will couple "old" New Orleans facia with "new" New Orleans exclusivity. A toney residential area and lots of accommodations for the tourists.

2. It will definitely be smaller, but I think a lot of people will return.

I would.

I think the musicians will come back, and when schools and colleges open, all the people who work in them will too, and then of course businesses.

My prediction is that it will be different in a lot of ways -- smaller, maybe even less of a middle class than there was before, and even weirder and more itself than it ever was.

Too many people love it too much.

3. If left to Bush, Cheney & Halliburton, you'd be right.

They'd turn it into a "Special Economic Zone", and really clean up (while reapportioning it in the DeLay manner).

OTOH: We could show COMPASSION for such a vital part of our own people, and rebuild it, and safely. The Dutch took a very similiar hit in 1953, and they were just recovering from the devastation of WW 2. They not only rebuilt it close to what it was, but MUCH safer. Other war-devastated countries did the same with cities almost totally destroyed (eg: Liepzig).

The rest of the world, already deeply sceptical over Iraq, will watch carefully to see what this self-proclaimed "only Super-Power in the world" does.

yeah i know ppl, even the hub, who swear life is too short & they won't go thru this again

but they will as soon as they see how the price of real estate has shot up on higher ground

Bab's Oatmeal Hut...Everyone always said she looked like the Quaker Oats guy..Grab up a bowl of steaming hot cajun oatmeal...then Make a RUN for the porta potties..

Beads R Us....Authentic BK beads (before Katrina)..Buy 'em by the handful, or string 'em together for your own souvenir..(Keep away from children..a choking and poison hazard)

Sign up for the GrayLine Tour of "Old N'Awlins"..Respirator and protective clothing included..... Includes a side trip to the Nature preserve (waders included also)..Camera not necessary ...the animals are still "evacuated").. Picture postcards of the former wildlife are available in the gift shoppe at the end of the tour.


And for the finale...don't miss the moonlight cruise across lake Ponchartrain at dusk.....But..be sure to Pick a speedy boat.. the trick is to make it to the other side before the boat disintegrates..
