You see, I was in school back in the day when "under God" wasn't in the pledge.

If they must insist on the pledge, why not offer both versions: the original and the revised. People don't know that the original did NOT include "under God" even tho it was written by a Protestant minister!

Personally, I would prefer a pledge of allegiance to the Constitution of the United States. Maybe something that includes "We, the people" and to "promote the general welfare" and other sentiments listed in the preamble.

I am going to memorize the preamble and just quote it to my RW coworkers and acquaintences. Maybe that will shut them the F* up.

I remember how STRANGE it sounded to say "one nation, under God, indivisible..." it broke up the accustomed rhythm, and destroyed the schoolboy joke of *giggle, giggle* "one naked individual." I NEVER say "under God" nowadays. I am coming more and more to believe that no American citizen should pledge anything but to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States of America."

City councils and whatnot. Many civic organizations also have the ceremony at the beginning of meetings.

Those around me can usually hear it. In many cases, they do the same, and we sort of smile at each other and go on.

BTW, I'm a Unitarian, and others to whom I refer are too.

But we recite it at non-Unitarian events.

Our school system has a daily recitation of the Pledge.

For myself, I have absolutely no problem with it. So far, none of the students have made an issue of it. I have decided that if some one ever does, I will not make an issue of their refusal.

Every printed rendition of the pledge I can find has "God" thus, with a capital 'g'. In a predominantly Judeo-Christian society, that implies the Judeo-Christian god, i.e. Yahweh.

God is God, whether you see it as Judeo-Christian, or the God in AA. Frankly, if I was to complain about anything in the pledge, it would be the phrase Under God. I always have trouble with putting God "up there" and me "down here." Already they've set me up to be lowly. I always thought Paul explained it rather well. "In Him we move and have our being." Doesn't sound like a God that is "up there" to me. But, as Jesus once said about the Pharisees and Sadducees, "You strain at nats and swallow camels."

I haven't done it since High school, but when I was in school, I did a varity of things, I would mostly not even stand up, and do nothing, but if there was a teacher that was in charge of the class/homeroom for a day and I knew they were the type that would write you up if you didn't stand and say the pledge, I would either just stand and say nothing or just pretend to say the pledge.

And I think they do it at the basketball games also. I will stand and acknowledge the flag respectfully, but I no longer 'pledge' to it. I stand because I want to, out of respect for the flag, because it's my flag, not just the fucked up right wingers'. But I do not place my hand over my heart, to me that's hand in hand with reciting the pledge. I also haven't been singing the national anthem at the games; it feels wrong to sing about being proud of America when we've become such a fucked up nation.
