British MP blasts Canada over Iraq
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20050917.wgalloway0916/BNStory/Front/

Mississauga, Ont. — Despite its refusal to fight in Iraq, Canada is complicit in the U.S. war on terrorism and should withdraw from Afghanistan, an outspoken left-wing British MP said Saturday.

“I'm amazed that so many people in Canada believe they're not a part of this crime,” George Galloway said at the sixth annual conference of the Islamic Circle of North America and the Muslim Association of Canada.

“Canada has sent an army of 1,000 soldiers to occupy the Muslim country of Afghanistan (and ships to the Persian Gulf),” Mr. Galloway said.

“Your ships in the Gulf and your soldiers in Afghanistan are doing the dirty work of George W. Bush and Tony Blair. They are freeing American ships and soldiers to go to Fallujah and massacre the people of Iraq.”

3. Welcome to DU !!
Never enough Canadian's!

I was impresed by Galloway's speech and his bitch-slapping of Norm Coleman. But since then it seems he's just insulting people.

2. It is generally agreed in the world that the war in Afghanistan is legal
and necessary....So he's saying Canada shouldn't be there?...What is this guy's problem?...I think he just likes to be angry for the sake of being angry...

4. Absolutely legal. We were attacked and as our Alli Canada can join the war
But what this guy doesn't understand about kicking the leg out from under the afghanistan table is this. Bush will abandon America's War in Afghanistan for Halliburton's War in Iraq.

11. Actually I am still waiting for the evidence Powell promised 4 years ago...
...that we never received. The fat Osama tape didn't quite do it for me. If this administration had told us the truth about anything I might feel different. But they haven't.

Interview on Meet the Press

Secretary Colin L. Powell
Washington, DC
September 23, 2001

<snip>QUESTION: Are you absolutely convinced that Usama bin Laden was responsible for this attack?

SECRETARY POWELL: I am absolutely convinced that the al-Qaida network, which he heads, was responsible for this attack. You know, it's sort of al-Qaida -- the Arab name for it is "the base"-- it's something like a holding company of terrorist organizations that are located in dozens of countries around the world, sometimes tightly controlled, sometimes loosely controlled. And at the head of that organization is Usama bin Laden. So what we have to do in the first phase of this campaign is to go after al-Qaida and go after Usama bin Laden. But it is not just a problem in Afghanistan; it's a problem throughout the world. That's why we are attacking it with a worldwide coalition.

QUESTION: Will you release publicly a white paper, which links him and his organization to this attack, to put people at ease?

SECRETARY POWELL: We are hard at work bringing all the information together, intelligence information, law enforcement information. And I think, in the near future, we will be able to put out a paper, a document, that will describe quite clearly the evidence that we have linking him to this attack. And also, remember, he has been linked to earlier attacks against US interests and he was already indicated for earlier attacks against the United States.

White House reneges on proof of bin Laden’s guilt

By Kate Randall
29 September 2001

Within a day of an announcement by the Bush administration that it would provide proof that Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda organization were responsible for the September 11 terror attacks, the government reneged on its pledge.

Last Sunday, Secretary of State Colin Powell appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and said the government would soon “put out a paper ... that will describe clearly the evidence that we have linking” bin Laden to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Powell was responding to pressure on the US from governments in the Middle East, as well as some of Washinton’s NATO allies, who are demanding something more than bald assertions that bin Laden and his Afghan protectors are guilty of the terror attacks on New York and Washington before fully committing themselves to support American military strikes. He was also responding to widespread unease and skepticism within the American population toward the government’s claims, as well as its plans for an open-ended war—feelings that persist despite grief and anger over the attacks on September 11, and a relentless media campaign to whip the country into a patriotic frenzy.

The day after Powell’s statement, banner headlines appeared in newspapers across the country announcing the imminent report on bin Laden’s guilt. A front-page article in Monday’s New York Times cited statements by government officials that the evidence “reaches from the southern tip of Manhattan to the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan.”

But by Monday afternoon, the Bush administration was backtracking on making any public presentation of evidence. Ari Fleischer, Bush’s press secretary, said there were no plans to produce a report and that Powell’s remarks had been misinterpreted. Consistent with the media’s shameless promotion of the government’s war drive, by Tuesday virtually all mention of the promised “white paper” had disappeared from the newspapers and TV broadcasts.

5. Galloway is starting to do more harm than good...
Why don't he blames the French ?

"A total of 1,800 French troops are involved in the stabilization of Afghanistan, including the French Navy’s contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom.

- 900 French troops are deployed in that country as part of the International Security Assistance Force. France is also playing a significant role in training the Afghan national army, alongside the U.S. and the United Kingdom, having initially organized three Afghan battalions of 500 men and being presently involved in the training of all Afghan officers. Additionally, 200 special troops are involved alongside American troops in the fight against the remnants of the Taliban regime in southern Afghanistan.

- In the wake of the 9/11 tragedy, France offered its military resources and capabilities to support the American-led military campaign, Operation Enduring Freedom, in Afghanistan. Immediately, the exchanges of information between our naval commanders increased, particularly in the Indian Ocean, thus intensifying the fight against all types of trafficking.

- Since October 21, 2001, French reconnaissance aircraft and air tankers have contributed to the air campaign over Afghanistan. They were reinforced from the winter of 2001 to the summer of 2002 by French naval aviation forces and French Air Force transport planes and fighters. Indeed, France was the only country, along with the United States, to have flown bombing missions over Afghanistan in direct support of American ground troops, in particular during Operation Anaconda. From October 23, 2001 to September 30, 2002, a total of 12,000 flying hours were conducted in support of operations in Afghanistan. The Mirage 2000D and Super Etendard destroyed 33 targets linked to Al Qaeda or the Taliban regime in direct support of American Special Forces. Today, 130 military are based in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, helping to operate the airport and supporting 2 transport aircraft engaged in the support of the French contingent in Afghanistan.

- French forces arrived early on the ground in Afghanistan. From December 2, 2001 to January 27, 2002, a reinforced company secured in Mazar-e-Sharif the detachment of U.S. engineers repairing the airfield in order to fly in humanitarian assistance. In total, some 5,500 French soldiers were sent to the region.

- The French Navy continues to patrol the Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Oman. It has been monitoring commercial sea lanes, detecting and boarding suspicious vessels, as well as escorting coalition boats through the area since December 2001. France is the second largest contributor to the maritime task force in charge of this mission."

So shall we be blamed for playing George's game ?

There is a consensus in Europe of NATO peacekeeping in Afghanistan and backup in the hunt of Bin Laden. Most of Europeans consider that mission being necessary and having a purpose. Iraq is a different thing.

Galloway should not mix fight against terrorism and Bush's follies.

I listened to his debate with Hitchens and besides the fact that Hitchens was presenting a lot of neocon BS, I must say that Galloway couldn't counter him with facts but mostly with empty rethoric...

If Galloway is going to repeat the Fonda trick with posing with a NVA gun, he'd better stay in its constituency. The Neocons have enough weapons, no need to give them more...

6. I've been wondering about Mr. Galloway lately
He seems to be doing the anti-Bush movement more harm than good recently with some of his statements. Could he have become a "straw man" for the right on purpose?
